(Reuters) - The Obama administration will unveil a "more realistic" vision for the military on Thursday, with plans to cut tens of thousands of ground troops and invest more in air and sea power at a time of fiscal restraint, officials familiar with the plans said on Wednesday.
The strategic review of U.S. security interests will also emphasize an American presence in Asia, with less attention overall to Europe, Africa and Latin America alongside slower growth in the Pentagon's budget, the officials said.
Though specific budget cut and troop reduction figures are not set to be announced on Thursday, officials confirmed to Reuters they would amount to a 10-15 percent decline in Army and Marine Corps numbers over the next decade, translating to tens of thousands of troops.

Yes, it’s interesting that in addition to providing for our national defense the military as an insitution also provides probably the best ‘job training’ and ‘secondary education’ available. Hussein wants to cut this while expanding EBT Card use, Pell Grants, etc.

The economy can not absorb most of these troops into the job pool, so do you just give them unemployment checks or do you find "work" for them at home?
The Pentagon has added 99 general and flag officers in the last decade, which equates to an 11% growth in that category, higher than any other.
Despite all the bluster about trimming the numbers of admirals and generals (there were supposed to be 17 getting the axe through Gates’ plan), there were in fact 9 added to the roster. It would appear the GFOPS (general and flag officer protection society) has swung into high gear at the expense of the real warfighters.
The “domestic army” is TSA agents. They are growing like wild fire.
I am a mom and know nothing about the military, but wouldn’t this move indicate a likely further reliance on the use of non-human resources in conflicts - like the increasingly popular drones? It seems as though it would be easier for politicians like ours to go ahead and jump heedlessly into conflicts which could go on and blossom into full-blown disasters if the human cost (and voter wrath) for our side is thought negligible in the decision-making process. Yet I want our military people as safe as possible and armed with the best available weapons.
If we’re going to cut tens of thousands, why was there such a big rush to get the sexual disorientation crowd into the military? With a smaller military, it would seem that we’d only want America’s best.
Shades of Slick Willy. Instead of Slick Willy’s brilliant idea of making 1/3 to 1/2 of each division guard and reserve with no training and no equipment, the Food Stamp President will just turn them loose with an economy that is in the pits. Trying to cause social unrest seems to be the objective.
Now they will have an even larger impact on the overall military population. Almost like a plan, really.

Obama works for some other country as he can’t possible be an American President...saying from the get go he would transform our nation and Michelle saying we would even have to give up some traditions....what they mean is America will no longer represent the Land of The Free except for the elites of which Obama is Chief Thug. What other country reduces its security in the face of on going terrorism...Obama seems to want this nation to be vanquished along with Israel. Impeachment anyone?
