Santorum had little choice, really.
He made the best deal he could make: he got Spector to promise a fair hearing, and preference for, any Conservative SCOTUS nominee.
I had to support Bob Dole, for President, since I am from Kansas.
Bob Dole is and was a great man, but he is no conservative.
Politics is a BUSINESS and decisions must be made.
If we, as conservatives, do not do a few things every now and then to cooperate with the moderates, we will not win.
Expecting a sitting officeholder to endorse AGAINST a sitting officeholder, in the same Party, in the same STATE, is too much to ask.
Had Spector WON, and if Spector was STILL in the Senate, why would Spector feel he owed conservatives anything at all?
Again.
Politics is a business.
You do what you have to do to move the ball forward.

“If we, as conservatives, do not do a few things every now and then to cooperate with the moderates, we will not win.”
After more than two decades, this siren song is worn out.
