SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Police officers are responding to a shooting in the Converse Heights area of Spartanburg.
Spartanburg Public Safety said officers were called to the 100 block of Connecticut Avenue Tuesday afternoon.
Captain Art Littlejohn said the two homeowners were told someone was living in the home, but no one had been authorized to be inside the residence, so they went to check on the property.
When they arrived, Littlejohn said they found a stranger at the front door. Both homeowners were armed with handguns, one of them pulled their weapons to warn the man to back away from them, according to Littlejohn.
The incident report said the homeless man tried to grab the gun, so the homeowner's wife shot him in the head. Neither homeowner was injured, according to officers.
When police arrived on the scene, they found the man, Gregory Wells, 31, of Spartanburg, lying at the front door and the homeowners standing nearby. Wells was responsive and taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center where he underwent surgery.
A neighbor told FOX Carolina that the home has been on the market for four years and was unoccupied at the time of the shooting.
The incident report said the wife told officers that they went to the front door and while looking for the key, her husband pulled on the door and it opened. She said the man came to meet them at the door, grabbed her husband and she shot him.
There is no word yet if any charges will be filed in the incident as the investigation is ongoing.

If you cannot prevent other people from using your property, then it is not really yours.
Oh cripe....I hate when that happens...
Then what do we have police for, if not to enforce laws respecting the ownership of private property?
“Wells was responsive and taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center where he underwent surgery”
...Obamacare wouldn’t send a homeless man to surgery!
REVENUE ENHANCEMENT, pure and simple.
I’d have let my German Shepherd into the house. The squatter would be out directly....
Oh cripe....I hate when that happens... ...................... Yeah, me too. I guess it will turn into a 3M damages case for the vagrant.
oh man how great is that when the old lady whips out her piece and takes down the guy who just grabbed you?.. she’s a keeper no matter what she looks like
Suppose he was part of the Spartanburg OWS group?
Is the OWS still going on? Haven’t heard much out of them for a couple of weeks now.
Squatter must have been a nawtherner. Everyone else knows it’s bad manners to grab at a guy holding a gun on you...
2 weeks ago, I had the same kind of call. Commercial property owned by the estate, I'm the closest, someone was inside the fence.
I was lucky that there was a cop doing traffic revenue less than a block away. So I told him what was going on. I got to leave my pistol in the console, and the guy with the vest went with me. ;)
I carry a gun because I can't carry a cop. But if a cop is there and handy... I'll use 'em.

Good story. You used very good judgement.
“the homeowner’s wife shot him in the head...Wells was responsive and taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center where he underwent surgery.”
I’d be dang proud to have her watching my back. I believe as a reward, I’d take mama to pick out a bigger caliber pistol.
