Best Buy Cancels Christmas Orders, Causes Consumer and Analyst Backlash
December 22, 2011 7:02 PM EST

With three days to go until Christmas and Hanukkah already underway, Best Buy (NYSE:BBY) assured it won't be on many customers' "nice" lists this season.

On Thursday, the national consumer electronics retailer notified a fraction of its online customers that it would not be able to complete their online orders -- some of which were placed in November -- and could not guarantee they would be able to get their purchased items by the holiday.

The move is a considerable blow to an as-yet-undetermined percentage of the many consumers who moved their holiday shopping online this year. For the tens of thousands of people who spent the Black Friday after Thanksgiving shopping for electronics on their laptops, for example, instead of having to sit in freezing temperatures for hours on end to get the best deals, what might have seemed like a brilliant idea just a month ago might not appear so appealing today.

I shopped Amazon and LLBean and got all my stuff in spite of the blizzards in Denver so I’m pretty happy. Usually came in two to three days.

Especially if Best Buy is generating a large portion of its profits from its credit card.....

To any Freepers who might be affected, BB is sending out giftcards through the email address associated with the account that had the order cancelled. Most of the giftcards are worth $20.

SO if you are affected, make sure to check any emails from BestBuy.

Sounds like BB has hired some of Obama’s finance idiots. They might try hiring folks who actually know technology next time.

I gave up on BB about 2 years ago after almost being robbed in the parking lot. The only one in our area is in a heavily Latino/black area of town. I went over to HHGregg and found them much more amenable. However, BB does have a better selection of items.

Consumers continually trade customer service for the lowest possible price ( I do it myself too frequently ) and we end up with these big box stores who don’t give a damn about the customer. If I were one of those who isn’t getting my order in time, I’d cancel it and demand a full refund.

I ordered a toy for my daughter’s soon to be step daughter (Not sure what that makes me) online from Toys R Us on Monday and received it yesterday evening.

They were sold out every where but Toys R Us didn’t disappoint!

I’m thinking that Best Buy is going down the tubes and their inventory is limited.

I bought a piece of tech from Best Buy a few months back. I talked to a sales person who was extraordinarily knowledgeable, very helpful. After a little more conversation, and since I'm a nosy Nelly, I found out that the gentleman to whom I was speaking was actually employed by the piece of tech’s manufacturer. He was there at Best Buy to sell his employer's product.

Best Buy lost us years ago with their idiotic returns policy.
Our microwave stopped working so we purchased a replacement at BB. After plugging in the new one, we discovered the problem was with the electrical outlet. But BB would not accept a return of the microwave because “the box had been opened”.
I don’t need that kind of crap when HHGregg is right across the street.

As to what that makes you - it makes you a grandma. Congrats. I have one granddaughter who has out grown toys but had the joy last night of gifting my great nephews and great niece... ages 2-9. The big hit was talking cookie monster for the 2 year old.

Last time i checked Best Buy was not celebrating Christmas but was celebrating the “Holiday season” so maybe those folks will get their items before the season ends.

I love Amazon, but that infamous FedEx video recently making the rounds has me rethinking mail order for pricy, fragile items....

Amazon Prime has been amazing! I bought one item in a store this year...everything else online (most of it through Amazon.)
