Austin-tacious? Texas Gov Puts Values on Display

Rick Perry's latest ad was intended for Iowa, but thanks to the national media, it's airing on every network in America. A number of pundits are panning the spot for its bold social conservative themes, which they insist will hurt the Texas Governor's chances. "I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm a Christian," Gov. Perry says, "but you don't need to be in the pew every Sunday to know there's something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can't openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school." The ad is called "Strong," and that's the kind of message it sends on issues like religious freedom. "As President, I'll end Obama's war on religion. And I'll fight against liberal attacks on our religious heritage." True, Gov. Perry probably wouldn't win the media's vote with that kind of platform--but he does stand to benefit with everyday Americans who are tired of seeing their values in the line of fire under this administration.

Despite the heat Perry's campaign is taking over the ad, the Governor stands by it. "I'm very comfortable with that ad," Perry said. And he should be. In just the last several months, there's been a powerful surge of anti-religious sentiment from this administration, and it's already bled into our military, federal funding, and international affairs. Consider this inventory of decisions from the Obama administration, which date back to June of this year.

Navy officials ban Bibles and religious materials from Walter Reed Military Medical Center as part of new patient guidelines for wounded warriors (9/2011) The Pentagon releases new regulations, forcing chaplains to perform same-sex "weddings" despite their religious objections (9/2011) Secretary Hillary Clinton demonizes other countries' religious beliefs as an obstacle to radical homosexual rights (12/2011) The Department of Veterans Affairs censors references to God and Jesus during prayers at Houston National Cemetery (6/2011) Officials at Health and Human Services denied funding for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' successful program for sex trafficking victims because of the church's teaching on human life (11/2011) The Marine Corps consider tearing down a Camp Pendleton cross meant to honor fallen heroes (11/2011) Air Force officials strip religious curriculum from a 20-year-old course on "just war theory" (9/2011) HHS unveils new health care rules that ignore basic conscience protections for medical workers with faith-based objections to abortion and contraception (8/2011) Administration officials refuse to intervene in the closing of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (12/2011) President Obama lobbies for the passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which tramples on the faith of employers in hiring, firing, and promotion decisions (10/2011) The Air Force Academy turns its back on needy children because a charity has religious ties (11/2011)

All of these decisions were made in the last six months. If this isn't a steady drumbeat against religious liberty, I don't know what it is. Good on Gov. Perry for recognizing the urgency of fighting back before it's too late.

Thanks for posting this. I had no idea all these things were happening. I knew there was a war on religion, but this is way over the line.

This is clearly a battle for your country and it's values, we have to have the right man leading us.

America needs to be told, by its leaders, that we cannot exclude God from our public discourse, that our economic and social programs need to be ordered to divine law, and that divine law, and not government, is the source not only of our rights, but of all just laws, that any law that is not natural is inherently repressive.

So I’m not picking on Perry for putting his “values on display.” I just think he did an amazingly poor job of it. Although I certainly agree that gays shouldn’t serve in the military, I’m left speechless by the pettiness of the issue. So that’s how we’re to show we’re a Christian people? We keep gays out of the military? Even if he wanted to pick a single issue, and not any grand principle or philosophy, how about that we’ve killed 50 million babies? That one in three school children are victims of statutory rape? That the majority of children now live in “broken homes,” or marriages that were never forged in the first place?

What’s idiotic is to fail to understand that the point was a *contrast* between two actively promoted policies of this Administration. Or that 30 second ads aren’t all inclusive.

It’s not policy of any administration to promote child sexual assault or broken homes. This administration has done the things in the list “in the last 6 months.”

I provided the above link to show there is a concerted effort to vote against the Perry ad on YouTube.

Yahoo had an article posted yesterday about an email circulating among the gay rights crowd to go there and "dislike" the ad. Can't find either today.

Now they are trying to get the video removed as "hate speech." There is also an article of how "Hollywood" has responded. Hate speech?! Yes, I guess there are a lot of haters out there, but NOT Perry's supporters.

Yesterday, here in TX, there was a poll of Republican Primary Candidates for the Presidency. Perry was second when I first viewed it..By the end of the day, Ron Paul had 77% of the votes..

The Paulistas are organizational geniuses, or Dem’s are supporting Paul to get Obama re-elected. I’m sure there is already a strategy in place to overwhelm Caucuses with Paul supporters. It will be similar to how Obama supporters took over the dem caucuses in TX, even though Clinton was more popular here.

I think YOU miss the intent. It’s to call out to the country how far our religious rights have fallen. He probably could NOT turn back the recent undoing of the gay ban, legally, but is saying that every Christian value we hold dear is under attack and being desecrated and trashed DAILY, and it’s time to put a stop to it. He is right. If someone does not stop this, we will have open persecution of believers in the US and no one will intervene. That day is rapidly approaching. You cannot end an email at work with a Christian greeting any longer without it becoming an issue, and reason for dismissal. I know. But the atheists have no such infringements placed on them, so they can use any socialist statement they want and it is not removed. In fact, you can use Confucius, Dali Llama, any old proverb you want from any religion, except Judaism or Christianity, and you will not be reprimanded.

You have to constantly prove that it is still legal to wear religious symbols on your person in the federal workplace, which can be a very hostile workplace for believers.

If you are not aware of persecution, you need to look it up. It exists. It’s getting very nasty out there. Our country has now raised a couple decades of children outside the church. No one knows the “golden rule’ any longer, nor do they want to hear about it or follow it. Bullying Christian kids is not even considered bad or wrong any more. Times have changed.

His point re gays in the military v prohibition on Bibles and Christmas was not to be petty about gays, but to show where this administration’s values and priorities lie: with far-left causes and against conservative values. I thought the point was extremely well-made.
