BEIJING — The Chinese authorities have suspended production at a solar panel factory after protests by residents who blame the plant for fouling the air and water...

Village residents have complained about what they called toxic smokestack emissions and about factory wastewater that they say has killed a large number of fish...

Why does this sound like it should have come from The Onion . . . ? The communist regime shutting down a solar panel plant via heeding the public's wishes?—the same regime that used "tank diplomacy" on the Tiananmen Square protesters? Yeah OK.

The big irony is how the production of supposedly “eco-friendly” solar-panels is hurting people’s lives, which is what loads of politicians are claiming solar power is part of eliminating. While I do like basic benefits of solar power, such as the cheap garden lights you can buy at Wal-Mart, at the same time, questions need to be raised about production costs and what’s going on here as well, and how our consumption is affecting the locations from which we are demanding products such as solar panels from.

Way too funny!

Why is this getting more press than DiFi and the Sierra Club shutting down a solar power plant in the Mojave Desert?

Forget photovoltaic. Go for solar towers or the ones that use heliostats to heat salt or sulfur for 24 hour power.

"The communist regime shutting down a solar panel plant "

And the Red Chinese are opening the plant in Laughlin, Nevada:

“Currently we’re working with ENN Solar Energy to build a manufacturing generation facility. There is approximately 5,100 acres outside of Laughlin. The manufacturing side will produce solar panels for residential and commercial.”

Exactly, focused solar energy, either as parabolic trough, or heliostat tower, is better for actually being able to store back-up power. Using focused solar energy is also practical for waste incineration.

Even more advanced, though not yet practical is space-based solar power, emitted by microwave. The geosynchronous position of the solar satellites ensure that they are in the Sun 24/7. The focusing of energy at the receiver ensures that the radiation emitted by the satellites is dispersed and harmless unless focused intensely by the receiver.

Yes, unless...:)
