As Mitt Romney continues to dominate the polls in New Hampshire, he is also back in front of the Republican presidential pack in Iowa - though just barely.
But in Iowa, the first caucus state, Romney has not enjoyed quite as strong support. For a time, he fell behind Texas Governor Rick Perry, who entered the race in August. Now, Godfather's Pizza CEO Herman Cain poses the biggest threat.
A new NBC News-Marist poll out today found Romney with support from 23 percent of likely Republican caucus goers in Iowa, followed by Cain with 20 percent. The two leaders were followed by Texas Congressman Ron Paul at 11 percent, with Texas Governor Rick Perry and Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann tied at 10 percent.
In New Hampshire, the NBC News-Marist poll has Romney at 44 percent, followed by Paul and Cain, both at 13 percent. The rest of the candidates are at or below 6 percent.

Amen.
“since the first primary is still months away”
The clock is ticking. Voting might start in the first half of December. Romney has the moderate wing locked and Perry is fighting Cain for the conservative vote. The question now is whether Perry will hand the nomination to Romney or will do the honorable thing and drop out now.
Cain is just now having his positions examined in depth, and he only has several hundred thousand dollars in the bank. We’ll see who wins, but it shows desparation calling for people to drop out 2 months before the first vote is cast.
I've been unsure about whether it would be better for Cain (or Palin if she had entered) to contest New Hampshire or concede it to Romney -- who has spent orders of magnitude more time, money and effort there -- and concentrate on South Carolina and Florida.
My current opinion is that with the Tea Party solidly on his side, he should contest every primary, including New Hampshire.
If Herman Cain can win New Hampshire or even come close, then Mitt Romney's campaign is over and Cain would have a clear path to the nomination.
Of course, there will be many new events and changes before the primaries, but with the Tea Party, Cain's support should only keep growing.
.
Any Poll saying Romney is above 9% is lying. Do you know anybody other then liberals, media, his church and paid schills who supports Rino Romney? Neither do I.
Absolutely not. Do not listen to the Establishment Republicans and Mainstream Media. They don't have a clue.
Cain is now the front-runner and his support will continue to grow.
Cain will win the nomination and he will be President of the United States.
Herman Cain is a good man and needs everyone's support. Everyone on Free Republic should unite around him.
Make no doubt about it: Herman Cain and the Tea Party will win.
I have never met a person in Florida who voted for McCain in our decisive primary in 2008. He eked out a victory over Romney (who at that time was a much better option among the two) by a few percentage points. Have never found a person who was said they voted for McCain.
New Hampshire has an Open Primary. So It will be the liberals who pick the Republican Nominee in that state - I.e. Romney. Results of New Hampshire mean nothing.
I think everyone on Free Republic is in general agreement on that, although I do know a lot of suburban Republicans, who are not really paying attention, who support Romney.
Perry supporters should stop disparaging Cain and the Tea Party (as they have been doing since Perry declared); and instead of going after each other, we should all go after Romney.
.
Funny that you compared it to American Idol. I’ll one up that. Rick Perry is the Justin Bieber of the 2012 presidential race. Horrible politician/singer, but has legions of delusional fangirls.
That's probably true, but it's also true that if Cain, with the help of the Tea Party, could pull of a win in New Hampshire, Romney would be finished.
The MSM has it exactly wrong. Romney is in a much more precarious position than Cain.
Again, my opinion could go either way. I could see bypassing New Hampshire and possibly even Iowa, and making sure he wins Florida and New Hampshire. But with the Tea Party on his side, I tend to be on the optimistic side -- I think he can win Iowa and has a chance at New Hampshire.
.
In support of a candidate, there’s a line between “ardent” and “creepy”. You’ve crossed it.
what do you have against Romney?
Give it a break.
Rick Perry has been weak, inarticulate, and
then sends his wife out to complain.
Would it not be easier for him to be CONSERVATIVE?
Yes, nuts.
Mittens was supposed to have NH in the bag, yet he’s basically tied with Cain. As for Perry, he did it to himself.
You're preaching to the wrong crowd. It's not FReepers making the difference in Perry's catastrophic performance and crash in the polls. There aren't enough of us.
It's everyone else who's learning enough about the man to stop supporting him. Talk to them, these posts don't help anyone.
He's socialist yankee RINO scum who implemented a nazi healthcare plan on his own state for starters.
My better half said “We're looking hard at Cain.”
The In-Laws said, “Is that the black man?”
Point is: Some people are answering “Romney” in these polls simply due to name recognition. Romney has over 80% name recognition. Cain has only about 60% name recognition.
As Cain becomes more known, he will gain voters. Romney really has very little upside.
Take a look at the 15:30 - 18:00 minute segment. Cain’s sense of humor....
