I’m in East San Diego County. Power went out at about 3:37PM Thursday. It was out for more than 8 hours and just returned about 20-mins ago. Not a big issue for me and mine as we were prepared. I don’t like warm beer, though.

No sympathy for the state that re-elected Pelosi.

Thanks for that Excuse. We'll put you down as, "It's California's fault", even though the issue on the grid were located in Arizona.

I just got in BTW, and am enjoying the comments!

There's only one way I see to store large quantities of water and that is with big deep lakes. In my area every major river has a dam or several dams on it. Look at a map of Tennessee. In 1930 there were but a very few small lakes and a considerable number of wild rivers. The lakes came with a huge cost though. Just about everyone who's family has lived in this region had parents, grandparents, or great great parents, were uprooted and forced off their land by what TVA considered a fair price.

But a shortage of water wasn't the reason for our dams though. Hydroelectric power which was a legit reason, The Manhattan Project {another legit reason}, and FDR added saving us poor ignorant mountain folks from ourselves and our so called poor soil as the main cause LOL. That was the one that really angered people.

TVA flooded far more land and their rivers running full generation destroyed far more fertile farm land than any 1000 year flood could have possibly done. What I'm saying is government will have to be honest about it.

It looks like in Cali it will take flooding a lot of the northern valleys where it rains to feed water into the southern half. Killing two birds with ones stone the dams should be hydroelectric.

In addition some water would have to be piped a considerable distance or perhaps some river channels created to re-route the rivers from their discharge to the & sea sending the flow further south.

The next issue if I understand right would be getting other states to release water as well. That would just about take something like TVA or Corp of Engineers. There has to be a coordinator which is fair to all. One good secondary benefit of hydroelectric dams if done right is great Trout fishing. I'm serious. I'm about 15 minutes from some of the best Trout water in the southeast.

They’re building a new 500 KV line from SD to AZ and the crews working in the El Centro area have had 3 linemen die and about 7 have spent several days in the hospital due to heat stroke.

It’s incrementally being brought back on line.

Someone down in Arizona is going to gain some intense attention.

The regional power went out in much of the Southwest, (not just San Diego) including parts of Riverside, San Bernardino, even into Baja California. I had to bring out the emergency equipment. Had the hand-crank radio going in the garage and the clueless neighbors came over to hear what was happening. Guess my preparations about emergencies were not so paranoid after all. They were very grateful to have some news.

Many were gathered around my radio wondering what they should do. I told them to go home and get their lighting and potable water stuff going before sunset, and that I would designate one guy to inform the block about developments.

A couple of neighbor guys started freaking out and ask if I or others on the street had weapons. I said unless this is a multi-day event, we are pretty much safe down here, so don't worry other than having water.

They didn't like the answer and asked again. I said no (as the 870 buck sat behind me) and I asked do you? They said no and then asked what to do if this were long term and the looters headed south to our area ? Told them, go home and I'd let them know as things developed.

Lesson: Even when small shit hits the fan in an upscale community, the unprepared want stuff or at least leadership. Funny that one of these guys is an Obama supporter and a whiny liberal that has lived here as long as I, and we never talk. BUT, knowing I'm ex-military; ex-long-haired Harley rider; loner; and rock n roller, he looks to me for help. The guy is at least 6'2".

On the up side, my next door neighbor and I spent most of the blackout talking about which arms to use and where to position them.

Of course, it never got that bad because the blackout didn't reach up to North Orange County (barrio country), much less Los Angeles. If it had, it would have been a bigger learning experience.

Being the hottest day of the year, just hope no old folks suffered or died.

I’m in the electric utility business. I’ll look into the event today and try to dig up some hard facts. The media has historically been very poor (and very wrong) when reporting events involving the power grid.

In all honesty, I didn't fully appreciate hubby's preparedness (and hand crank radio) until last night.

I did, however, have full confidence that I could operate any weapon in the house if need be! :)

I woke up to a similar BEEP at 12:30am.
What a RELIEF! I do NOT want to be w/o power again, even in this paradise.
Did you know Chula Vista is supposed to be the best year-round climate in the nation? It’s the balmy bay breezes. When I had my studio in Coronado in the hot, hot summer, it was always so nice to come home to that steady bay breeze off the patio.

We’re spoiled! But even still, being w/o power, feeling helpless, is awful. And we were just w/o for 9 hours. I can’t imagine losing power for several days or weeks like the hurricane victims.

I thought sure it was a terrorist attack on 9/11 weekend, didn’t you?
