Charlotte has NYers in its web

Oh, Carolina!

Italian-Americans from Brooklyn, African-Americans from The Bronx and New Yorkers from the suburbs are flocking to the once sleepy town of Charlotte buoyed by big business like Bank of America and lots of Big Apple transplants.

What has been dubbed the "New York phenomenon" swung into high gear around 2005, according to Erin Watkins, research director at the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce.

There were 2,000 tax returns filed in Charlotte's Mecklenburg County in 2009 by either individuals or married couples who filed in New York City or Long Island the year before, according to IRS data.

This always cracks me up.

CHAPEL HILL - After Shawn Turschak saw two sets of McCain-Palin signs disappear from his yard within hours of being planted, he took steps to protect the latest pair.

On Monday, he ran wires from his house and hooked the signs into a power source for an electric pet fence. Then he mounted a surveillance camera in a nearby tree and wired it to a digital recorder.

Tuesday afternoon, the camera saw this: A neighbor trotting up with an Obama-Biden sign, grabbing a handful of volts, then fleeing at top 9-year-old boy speed.

A few minutes later, the boy’s father, Andrew Noble, was at Turschak’s door, demanding an explanation from Turschak’s 13-year-old daughter, who called her parents on the phone to say a man was yelling at her. Both families agree on one aspect of the exchange, that Noble chastised her for “electrocuting” his son, then left.

The Turschaks hurried home and received another visitor: an Orange County sheriff’s deputy.

“Democrats are for the little people.”

They sure are - Democrats are for the little people staying little.

Wow. My thinking on this hasn’t been nearly that thoughtful but thanks for the information. Definitely good to know. I’ve been stuck on the fact that I like having sushi and Indian food and (really good) pizza delivered to my house on my work from home days while my coworkers in Charlotte and Raleigh-Cary can not. Sounds pretty trivial compared to your very good point about the legal system.

Thank you.

Actually they’re called “half-backs”. The moved to Florida 20+ years ago, and have retired to the less expensive and clean air of North Carolina. They haven’t moved all the way back to New York, only “Half-back”.

Northwest Indiana is full of former Ill-Annoy residents. Formerly conservative towns now have Dim mayors. They can all go back as far as we Hoosiers are concerned.

Her next comment was “Democrats are for the little people.” Go figure.

Democrats ARE for the little people - they love them. In fact they have so much love to spare that they want to relegate everyone to little people.

It’s not called a “constitution-free zone” for nothing.

Yea, but all of that is cancelled out by Price's Chicken Coop, Pinehurst, Nascar, bass-fishin, college basketball and, of course REAL BARBECUE!!

I believe Charlotte is the site of the 2012 Democrat National Convention. One must assume that the citizens of Charlotte actively competed for that circus to come to their town.

BBQ is awesome but I’ll never understand the fascination with Nascar or fried chicken. Brazilian rotisserie chicken, on the other hand... wow!

Why do Jerseyites and LIdiots prefer high tax (and increasingly liberal) North Carolina over low tax Texas and Tennessee?

Again, why not a real conservative state like TX or TN that isn’t being ruined by obnoxious greasy transplants?

Uh, no. Our idiot officials competed for that. You should see the comments everytime a piece gets published in the Observer.
