That stupid comment just knocked him off my short list permanently.

Allen, stop eating ice cream. It has bad effects on your health and therefore imposes a societal cost. Your desire for personal pleasure has nothing to do with what should be allowed. Eat your peas.

He’ll get it from all sides for that comment.

I agree with him that BEHAVIOR is always a choice, including sexual behavior. If it were not, then rape could not be a crime.
I’m not sure what he is saying with the rest of his statement. He won’t be the nominee, so it may not matter much.

What always must be remembered is that the old media will do whatever they can to ask conservatives questions solely to make them look bad and then present whatever it is they say in the worst possible light.
West's mistake was to try to be conciliatory. That gave them an opening to make him look stupid.

Gays know that people can be talked into being gay—which is why they actively “recruit”. Lesbians are famous for their ability to turn it “on and off”. So, its really disingenuous to say that once you’re gay, you can’t ever go back.

I wish somebody would finally have the guts to stand up and say, “Homosexuality gives most normal people the creeps, and normal people have the right to not be creeped out.”

Jeez, I used to like this guy. He's now jumped the shark in about 5 different ways.
He's off my list of future possibilities. Like Romney, I just won't ever be voting for this guy because I have no idea what he will do or say in the future.
Sigh.

Representative Allen West is not my congressman and is not running for president. However, I admire him and don't find much fault in his position on homosexuality. We can't control anyone's sexual proclivities and I'm glad that West defined 'homosexuality' as a behavior, not some immutable organic trait that can't ever be changed, such as skin color. That fallacy (same-sex attraction is immutable) has driven the 'gay' movement and using it, as if the regular practice of same-sex sodomy were the same as being black or Hispanic, Italian, Polish, Swedish, whatever, has garnered 'gays' legal protections unavailable to those who are not practicing homosexual behavior as a 'lifestyle' and an almost 180 degree turn in public perception of 'gays', from pariahs to 'victims' deserving of 'respect' for their 'choice of who to love'. (Cue violins here.) Just hope it isn't you

Everyone has the same basic rights, and no one is telling people in the gay community that they dont have the same basic rights that any American has, he noted. Whats more, he elaborated that while he believed it to be a choice, he did not think it an inferior one that should be changed. No, I dont think that! he cried upon being asked. So it's all good, to him. He's dead to me.

This must be West’s wide stance, straddling the ol’ fence on this issue.
(Is this satire, by the way?)
To: SeekAndFind
Sounds reasonable to me. He's saying that people who choose to be homosexual should have the same basic human rights we all have. He doesn't think they should have any special rights that do not pertain to any others, as many in the homosexual activist community would prefer.
As for same-sex marriage, since marriage isn't a basic human right, it's not something that homosexuals can claim for themselves. There is no RIGHT to marriage; there are all kinds of rules attached to it, based on concepts adopted by civilizations throughout history.

I don't really care how gay people feel, or how straight people feel, about the subject of homosexuality. I'm more than happy to let people love or hate whatever they want so long as they keep it out of my face.
Invariably, some flamboyant zealot or bible thumper will try and persuade people to get fired up over their point of view. America's supposed to be the land of live and let live, but try saying that to those folks and see what happens. Both sides invariably get more agitated and aggressive, because minding your own business and living quietly and privately in your own beliefs just isn't enough for a lot of people.
The inability to mind our own business is the root of most of America's problems, financial and social.

There are some interesting reactions on this thread.
Viewing the video was of some help in analyzing West’s comments.
Being homosexual is not against the law.
In essence, West was asked if he believes those who are not violating the law should “change” a significant aspect of their character. (Sex crimes was not in issue in the context of this exchange, but the trap was set with the reporter’s use of the ambiguous word “behavior”.)
That is not a tough question for a black Ameican who grew up in Atlanta.
West’s response was consistent with what all of us should want from a conservative politician: stay out of our lives unless we are doing something illegal or we invite you in.
