With compromise talks at a vituperative standstill, Senate Republicans unexpectedly offered Tuesday to hand President Barack Obama new powers to avert a first-ever government default threatened for Aug. 2.

Under a proposal outlined by Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Obama could request increases of up to $2.5 trillion in the government's borrowing authority in three separate installments over the next year, as long as he simultaneously proposed spending cuts of greater size.

It sounds like the Israeli-Palestinean negotiators.

The Republicans give and Obama takes. However, once he’s taken, he’s forgotten what it was he was supposed to give.

Isn't that like tugging in opposite directions to force movement one way?

If Obama did not have Geithner to cook the books his way, I’d think he wouldn’t like this deal. It would keep this issue alive straight through campaign season. But Geithner would simply announce the debt ceiling won’t be a problem until...say...January 21, 2013.

Bad deal Mitch. I wish you hadn’t offered it.

Does the GOP have a political death wish?

The GOP RINO’s do. They have already given Zero trillions and he wants more.

Shut the government down.

Vote the worthless b$$tards out of office.

Pass a strict balanced budget amendment.

Reduce the size of government.

There is an easier way of doing this, the GOP Controlled House can pass a debt ceiling increase with the same amount in cuts and send it to the Senate. It would then be out of the GOP’s hand and squarely on Reid and Obama.

If McConnell doesn’t have the backbone, stomach, gonads etc. to face down the usurping POS 0bama, then he should step aside and let’s get someone who can!

Uh, as long as the spending cuts are mandatory and approved by Congress. This was the original idea all along, right?
