Paul Revere’s account.

http://www.americanrevolution.org/revere.html

His “warning” was simply telling them that they were too late to stop him.

I’m confused, so was he warning them, or just talking and passing the time of day.

Think any wrong-about-Revere types, not having logged in for a few days, will wander onto this thread and make a fool of themselves??

Do you think that the ignorant class get th Paul Revere story wrong due to a misreading of the Lonfellow poem.

Although he did get it historically correct. I can see how a less than factual teacher could mangle the story.

The poem just barely scratches the surface. Its fine for grade school kids to learn the basics but its really little more than a stylized summary.

The cartoon isn’t all that accurate either. From Revere’s notes on it afterwards, he said he told the “Regulators” that their plans for taking the arms were known, and that 500 militia (inflated numbers!!) were waiting for them. Shortly after that a church bell rang (to summon the militia to gather) which gave the British pause. And then gunfire and the British left to regroup. One historian mentioned that the militia may have discharged their weapons prior to going into the tavern for the meeting, as it was against the law to go in with a loaded weapon.

In Palin’s case - I like it how she focused on the still present concern of the government taking the people’s arms.

For those interested in more substantial references/sources and looking for support about the bells giving the alarm as reference by Palin:
HISTORY OF THE BATTLE OF LEXINGTON, ON THE MORNING OF THE 19TH APRIL 1775
BY ELIAS PHINNEY printed 1825
“They (British soldiers)de-tained him (Revere), with the other three prisoners from Lexington, till near three o’clock in the morning, when, finding no prospect of escape, Revere, in his turn, attempted to frighten them, by telling them, in a very triumphant tone of voice, “ Gentlemen, you have missed your aim. I left Boston after your troops had landed at Lechmere’s Point, and if I had not been certain, that
the people, to the distance of fifty miles into the country, had
been notified of your movements, I would have risked one shot,
before you should have taken me.” Another told them, “The
bell’s ringing, the country is alarmed, and you are all dead
men.” This appeared, in some measure, to alarm the officers.”
pages 18,19

NOTE: THERE ARE TWO STATEMENTS INCLUDED IN THE BOOK, ONE BY Nathan Monroe(Munroe sic) and one by Amos Lock, contemporaneous witnesses given in 1824 and 1825, that they were in service and/or area in 1775 and that they ALARM BELLS RINGING.

Well that may excplain the errors that have become urban legend.
Using a poem as a historical document. good grief.

You seldom hear mention of others who were riding that night but from Revere’s personal account it sounds like he was riding with 6 other men. Two went to the wake others staying at the tavern and he was captured with 4 others.

Obviously there would be other groups of riders heading out in other directions.

“One historian mentioned that the militia may have discharged their weapons prior to going into the tavern for the meeting, as it was against the law to go in with a loaded weapon.”

Wrongo, if they were expecting a fight soon and the weapons had been loaded for any length of time, they were fired so as to clear the old charge and then be reloaded. If the weapons did not fire, the loads then had to be cleared with a ball puller, a time consuming and laborious effort. So firing the guns to clear them, was the quickest way to make ready for immediate action.

Anyone familiar with rocklocks (AKA flintlocks) know all to well about misfires with old loads.

And I am speaking from over 50 years experience with muzzleloaders of all types.

Or, ...”the captive Loring, picking up Revere’s spirit, turned to the officers and said, ‘The bell’s a’ringing! The town’s alarmed.”

Thanks. I thought it odd that if they thought a fight was coming they would empty their weapons regardless of going into a bar.

Thanks for the explanation - interesting, and makes sense.

There was a show on Gettysburg and a guy made a point I thought was interesting.

“How would it be to be in a battle, and if you lived or died depended on how fast you were able to reload your weapon?”

Obviously more factors than just that - but it sure made the point.
