It is not the political bent of a city, but the racial makeup. Crime is in direct proportion to the percentage of blacks.

Exactly right. For example, Madison WI had a murder rate of 1.7/100,000 making it a very safe city. It's black population is just under 7%.

On those few occasions when I've been in downtown Dallas, I see menacing groups of thug-looking types with hats turned sideways, wearing baggy pants and listening to "music" at a loud volume. That's hardly comforting to someone of my age (on the threshold of 70). They look like they're up to no good.

That's more perception than anything. It's rarely the blinged out guys listening to loud music who are trouble. Most of them are actually pretty nice. Unfortunately that really is a problem for young people. Older folks tend to think they're up to no good even when they aren't.

It's when you find two or three in dark hoodies being quiet that you should worry and find the nearest refuge off the street. The guys wearing their distinctive hats, chains, jerseys, shoes etc, look wrong to a lot of older folks, even my age, but they're rarely any trouble.

Agree to an extent. I'd say percentage of poor urban blacks (Think of the infamous Chris Rock skit). There's tension in Southfield right now between the black middle class there and its neighbors to the south, Detroit.

Southfield

The truth that dare not be told.

It's long past time to end all the PC ways to hide the truth.

When it comes down to it, with Father Panick village gone, Seaside Park all but abandoned - and the indigents moving up north (to Hartford areas), Bridgeport is cleaning it’s act up. Plus, the taxes are so high that rent on paid-off homes must start at $1000 a month just to cover town expenses.

No, I still wouldn’t move to Bridgeport - but have you seen Newington lately ? Or New Britain ? I will walk the streets of Bridgeport (Down by harbor yard, the docks, train station, even most of downtown) but I chamber a round when I get off the exits for Middletown, New Britain, Meriden, Bristol..

You bet. Places I couldn’t afford to live in before have become total Sh!tpits. And Naugatuck Valley proves that it’s not just a racial problem.

Violence is down, gun ownership is waaaaaay up. Probably no correlation, though.

Top 25? Bull. Chicago, Gary, Indiana are plopping bodies down weekly. Starting a few weeks ago (when warm weather hit) I predict nearly 300 dead by the end of Sept from south chicago arcing down through south suburbs to Gary, Indiana.

St. Petersburg? Really? Being down there at night, not seeing bums or street rabble, clean streets, I’d call the place paradise in comparison to other cities. And yes, we did get lost and drive west of downtown some poor shoddy areas — this is nothing in comparison to what I’ve seen up north.

Yeah the dregs seem to be moving out of the major cities. Did you see the recent shootings in Manchester? Same neighborhood, two different incidents, two murders over I think 3 or 4 days. I drive through that neighborhood probably once or twice a month and it never really looked that sketchy.

Now that you mention it, I don’t hear about shootings in Bridgeport as much as I remember.

I live in Ashford CT, My neighbors are beef cattle, wild turkeys, black bear and deer. We have no police here; the state police barracks 12 miles away in Tolland could be called but there is never any need. Parts of Connecticut have gone to hell but it’s still pretty nice out here. Please don’t tell anyone.
