Border agents make bologna bust at NM crossing
AP/Boston Globe ^ | 5/17/11

It wasn't drugs or human trafficking but illegal bologna that caught the attention of border agents at a New Mexico port of entry.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at Santa Teresa seized 385 pounds of the Mexican contraband meat from behind the seat of a pickup that stopped at the port on Friday.

It's illegal to bring the bologna across the border because it's made of pork and has the potential to introduce foreign animal diseases into the U.S. pork industry.

My Bologna - Weird Al Yankovic

Oooh, my little hungry one,
Hungry one.
Open up a package of my bologna.
Oooh, I think the toast is done,
The toast is done.
Top it with a little of my bologna.

Never gonna stop,
Eat it up.
Such a tasty snack,
I always eat too much,
And throw up.
But I’ll soon be back
For my my my yi yi wooo!
M-M-M-My bologna.

Spreadin’ on the mustard now,
A-show me how.
Spread it on a little of this bologna.
Hopin’ that we don’t run out,
Don’t run out.
If we do, I’m sure that I’ll miss bologna.

Never gonna stop,
Eat it up.
Such a tasty snack,
I always eat too much,
And throw up.
But I’ll soon be back
For my my my yi yi wooo!
M-M-M-My bologna.

[burp]

Goin’ to the market now,
Market now.
I’m the city’s biggest bologna buyer.
Walkin’ down the shopping aisles,
Shopping aisles.
Fillin’ up my basket with Oscar Mayer.

Never gonna stop,
Eat it up.
Such a tasty snack,
I always eat too much,
And throw up.
But I’ll soon be back
For my my my yi yi wooo!
M-M-M-My bologna.

I’m not sure I see your point.

We inspect people at border crossings (in theory at least) to determine if they, or any of their possessions pose a potential threat to the United States. That seems like a pretty good idea to me.

When something is found during that inspection, in this case swine that’s potentially disease carrying, should we turn a blind eye? To make some sort of point? I don’t think reintroducing Classical Swine Fever (or worse, Foot and mouth disease or Swine vesicular disease) to damage our multi-billion dollar a year swine industry?

The hoof and mouth disease outbreak in England was traced back to meat illegally imported from Asia or the Middle East. Hundreds of thousands of animals had to be slaughtered and billions lost on control measures, farmer compensation, lost trade and drops in tourism.

Ah, [m]ost of the pork in the US comes out of mexico.

Why would you make such an absurd claim?

The U.S. is a net exporter of pork. Nearly 80% of our exports go TO mexico. Of the little imported pork that comes into the U.S., Canada and Denmark account for nearly all of it.

Most of the pork in the US comes out of mexico? Simply absurd.

I must share this with you:

The funniest thing happened here in Panama a couple of months ago. The police noticed that an ambulance was racing to and from at the same hour in the early morning with lights blazing and sirens wailing. They decided to check it out.

They found it was carrying a load of plantains (“platanos” in Spanish) back to market in the city. What they were doing was beating their competitors to the market by being first to unload their product and be ahead in sales.

You must be thinking of distilled pork, exported by Mexico as `El Doctor Porkenheimer’s Boner Juice.’

Processing doesn’t mitigate the threat of CSF and unless it meets or exceeds specific, unusual procedures, does not denature FMD.

whenever we go to visit relatives in New Mexico, we always come home with this certain bologna that we can’t find her in California... it has this red casing... my dad grew up eating it and just loves it... and the rest of us have come to like it too—it just reminds us of visiting New Mexico when we were kids... we probably made it out there every 3 years on a road trip... we call it New Mexico bologna or red bologna... my cousins all know that we like it, so they always make sure to serve it fried at at least one breakfast while we are there...

I wonder if those who were moving this illegal meat across the border knew it could do harm to the industry? The Al Queda manual, and OBL, talked about disrupting the lives and businesses of the infidels......

Unlikely, but possible.

The biggest risk is that someone unwittingly brings any of the diseases in.

Fortunately, muslims in general and arabs in particular are so stupid they're completely unable to master the basic science required to deliberately import the diseases. They'll have to luck their way into it.
