Is The End Nigh? We'll Know Soon Enough (World to end May 21)
NPR ^ | May 7, 2011 | Barbara Bradley Hagerty

Posted on 05/07/2011 9:27:55 PM PDT by tlb

May 21, "starting in the Pacific Rim at around the 6 p.m. local time hour, in each time zone, there will be a great earthquake,". The true Christian believers will be "raptured": They'll fly upward to heaven.

"and on top of all that, there's no more salvation at that point. 153 days later that the entire universe and planet Earth will be destroyed."

"I no longer think about 401(k)s and retirement," he says. "I'm just a lot less stressed, and in a way I'm more carefree."

Brown is married with several young children, and none of them shares his beliefs. It's caused a rift with his wife — but he says that, too, was predicted in the Bible.

But it appears that many became believers in 2009 after turning on Family Radio, a Christian network. Camping's predictions have inspired other groups to rally behind the May 21 date. People have quit their jobs and left their families to get the message out.

"Knowing the date of the end of the world changes all your future plans," says Adrienne Martinez.

She thought she'd go to medical school, until she began tuning in to Family Radio. She and her husband decided they wanted to spend their remaining time with their infant daughter.

"Why are we going to work for more money? "

"We budgeted everything so that, on May 21, we won't have anything left," Adrienne adds.

I've asked a dozen of Camping's followers the same question. Everyone said even entertaining the possibility that May 21 would come and go without event is an offense to God. They all hope they'll be raptured.

"If I'm here on May 22, and I wake up, I'm going to be in hell," says Brown

On the other hand, he will presumably have lots of company.

“BUT, when you made that point back at Post 41, to support it you quoted I Thess. 5:1 & 2 in such a way as to suggest that the day and the hour are so un-knowable that even CHRISTIANS will be caught unaware; as when a thief comes in the night.”

No I did NOT.
I made it in regards to the article and Camping’s predictions. (Is The End Nigh? We'll Know Soon Enough )
Did you read it?

Well, maybe it’s just me, but whenever I see those two verses cited without any further context it gets my attention, because they are only half of a set of two things being contrasted in that passage. I’m now confident that YOU know both sides of that comparison, but I don’t want anyone who doesn’t know to get any wrong ideas.

I know you were responding (appropriately, I might add) to Camping running around saying he knows the date of the Day of the LORD, and citing vv. 1 & 2 handily refutes the idea that he’s right. But, citing ONLY those two verses CAN leave people under the impression that even Christians will be completely ambushed by the end.

So, I think that, while the point has to be made that nobody knows the day or the hour, I also think it equally important to state the counterpoint: BUT The Church WILL have an idea that the Day of the LORD is imminent.

Because that “BUT” is often omitted, and the following verses left out when vv. 1 & 2 get quoted, there are any number of sincere Christians running around under the misapprehension that they’ll just never have a clue; it’ll all just happen when it happens, and they won’t know it’s about to happen until it’s already happening.

You’d be amazed how many Christians I’ve talked with about indicators of the end times, and they pop off with “Well, nobody knows the day or the hour,” and then are completely floored when I open the Bible and show them vv. 4 & 5 where they read that they WILL have a sense that it’s at hand; they WON’T be in the fog.

And here’s the kicker: because they incorrectly believe they just won’t have any clue, they aren’t even paying attention to the clouds gathering on the distant horizon. They’re not invigorated at the thought that Jesus’ return could be within the next 50, or even 20 years. So, as the economic and geopolitical storms whip up around the globe, all they see are tough times; they have no reason to regard these things with any sense of hope or anticipation. All they see is the temporal, negative headlines; they don’t have in mind that intensifying trials and upheaval may be “the beginning of birth pangs” that presage the actual return of Jesus Christ.

I don’t want any Christian to live like that; I want them all to KNOW that the Bible contains milestones, and indicators, and reference points that give us a timeline of events leading up to The Day of the LORD; and His intent is that we be aware of them, so we have an idea how close it’s getting. NOT so we can give a date, but so we can be appropriately fervent about the gospel.

And THAT is what’s so damaging about foolishness like what Camping has going on: his actions prompt society as a whole, and even Christians in some quarters, to throw the eschatological baby out with the bathwater. Consequently, on May 22nd and following, there will be just that much MORE resistance to talk about the legitimate end time indicators that really DO exist in the Bible, and their implications in light of current events.

“Watch and pray” will still be a wonderful admonition, of course; just so long as you don’t dare imply that there’s anything specific to watch for. And THAT’S a real shame, because Jesus — The Bridegroom God — IS COMING, even though Harold Camping is out to lunch about when.

The world is abundant with gullible people. Those that believe in the end of the world are similar to these:

Expectations that the world is soon to end are rife throughout the contemporary Muslim world. Because so many Muslims today face such a dismal situation, the religious climate is primed with anticipation and popular longings for the appearance of the Mahdi, or the Muslim messiah. Books, pamphlets, and internet chat rooms are replete with stories of the Mahdi and speculation about the coming time when he will finally appear to usher in the messianic state and sweep away the modern world’s suffering and injustice.

"For me remnant Israel today are Messianic Jews (a portion of the church)that believe in Our Lord Jesus Christ."

What is your opinion of this guy?

I Enjoy listening to Pastor Hagee but I think I disagree with him about Israel. IMHO, If I recall correctly, he seems to imply another path of salvation for Israel than through faith in Our Lord Jesus Christ?. I have not studied his position closely however. My conviction of salvation is Christ centric by grace through faith for everyone at all times including Abraham and Moses ( they believed the promise).

Good Post! I agree.

They’re not invigorated at the thought that Jesus’ return could be within the next 50, or even 20 years.

Do you really think it is this long however? My time span is from possibly today to maybe 3 years max.

Oh, I am glad you reminded me, Thank you for telling me about Cerinthus yesterday. I am quite sure I do not agree with everything he says, I believe he was gnostic? I do feel he was right about a coming literal coming 1000 kingdom. He may be confused about what happens there. It is still a bit of a mystery. Right now my conviction IMHO is our Lord Jesus Christ will rule the world both Jews and Gentiles during the 1000 years from a possibly "hovering" Heavenly New Jerusalem. A resurrected King David might sit on the earthly throne in Jerusalem and rule the Jews under the authority of Christ Jesus. This is just speculation on my part.

Oh I enjoy reading Gagdad Bob's book but don't agree with everything he says either.

I think Dante puts Mohammed in the part of Hell where heretics are. If I get some time I’ll check.

I enjoy Jack and Roxanna VanImpe, I do not agree with him when he says this earth will last forever, I feel after 1000 years 2 Peter kicks in and fire destroys everything. The last thing being destroyed is death.

I enjoy watching Hal Lindsey but his soothing voice sometimes puts me to sleep.

I read and enjoyed Tim LaHaye's Left Behind series, maybe it could have been done in about 4 books, seemed to drag a bit. I am not sure Gog Magog happens before the rapture as Tim says and right now I am considering, though not as excitedly as a few weeks ago, that the antichrist may be muslim not European as Tim and Hal currently believe.

I could imagine it being stretched—by God somehow—until just before the last of those alive when Israel became a nation in 1948 or retook Jerusalem in 1967 were to graduate from this life.

However, I think it exceedingly MORE LIKELY that Christ will return within the next 1-15 years.

And, remember . . . the children in Paladin1_DCS’s church—compelled by Jesus, visions of Jesus to ask their parents how to be saved !NOW! URGENTLY !NOW!

I do in fact use Ryrie's Study Bible NASV. I like a lot of his notes but do not agree with everything he says either. Chuck Missler, David Wilkerson and Quix have not said too much I disagree with.

I guess my point is we all see through a glass dimly. IMHO I feel saying I don't know is a good thing.
