George W. Bush: Drill more to lower gas prices

By: Jennifer Epstein April 27, 2011 08:24 AM EDT

Former President George W. Bush wants to see more oil drilling to combat prices at the gas pump that are nearing $4 a gallon, he said Wednesday.

“I would suggest Americans understand how supply and demand works. And if you restrict supplies of crude, the price of oil is going to go up and it effects gasoline,” Bush said on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” before telling host George Stephanopoulos that he’s not too interested in talking about policy or politics.

“You know, I really appreciate your giving me the chance to opine on the issues of the day, but as you know I made the decision to support causes I’m interested in without feeling like I’ve got to get an opinion on every issue,” Bush said. “So you’re still going to try, nevertheless. You haven’t lost a step, Stephanopoulos.”

Bush has largely steered clear of politics since leaving office more than two years ago, saying last year that Obama deserves to be able to govern “without criticism from me.” And in January, he said he had no plans to campaign or fundraise for any candidates or to become a TV talk show political commentator.

But before the former president begged off discussing policy in an interview about a bicycle tour he’s taking with wounded veterans, he did weigh in on reports that his successor will appoint Leon Panetta to be the next defense secretary and Gen. David Petraeus to take on the job of Central Intelligence Agency director.

IIRC, gas made its first rise above the $4 mark on GW’s watch.

How many new refineries did he approve? How much new drilling?

GW is a tad late to the ‘drill baby drill’ bandwagon.

Obama is taking credit for an increase in production this year BECAUSE of permits signed by Clinton and Bush not OBAMA.

Actually his energy plan would have us drilling in ANWAR, building refinaries and building nuclear but McCain successfully defeated it.

Pray for America

Politifact: But other areas not included in Obama's current five-year drilling plan, such as areas in the Pacific, are not technically closed; they're just unavailable for the time being. As a result, we give the Republican members a Barely True.

What a hoot! Someone needs to be fact-checking Politifact. Is there any meaningful difference between "closed" and "unavailable for the time being"?

Filled up for $4.17/gallon yesterday. The same station was $3.89 two days before that. Wonder what annual rate of increase that works out to?

GWB, I miss him but he was far from perfect.

However, comparing osamaobama to GWB is so different as to be comical. A man of dignity vs a bigoted, foul street organizer that has been involved in the destruction of our Country.

In 1999 I argued here that W would give us high deficits and open boarders.......but I will say this, I was and am proud of W,obama, is a weak pathetic shell of a man. A constant embarrassment to this country.

He lifted the moratorium.

Yes, but only at the last possible moment - after prices spiked and the GOP lost the legislative branch. Couldn't then and still can't drill ANWR as far as I know.

That was when Pelosi and Reid took over congress, wasn't it?

Be consistent! If you are blaming Pelose and Reid [Congress] for the $4 gas when Bush was president, you MUST blame Boehner and Reid [Congress] for the increases now.
