NATO: We Didn’t Know Libya Rebels Had Tanks

BRUSSELS - NATO acknowledged Friday that its airstrikes had hit rebels using tanks to fight government forces in eastern Libya, saying no one told them the rebels used tanks.

British Rear Adm. Russell Harding, the deputy commander of the NATO operation, said in the past, only forces loyal to Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi had used heavy armored vehicles.

Harding says the rebels and government troops are engaged in a series of advances and retreats between the eastern coastal towns of Brega and Ajdabiya, making it difficult for pilots to distinguish between them.

NATO jets attacked a rebel convoy between these two towns Thursday, killing at least five fighters and destroying or damaging a number of armored vehicles.

Tanks? TANKS? I thought these poor people were fighting Gadhafi with AKs and slingshots?

Rebels were shown in armored vehicles since day one. Of course, they should have painted some really obvious identifiers on them, kinda like the guys who paint “COW” in orange spraypaint on their cows during deer season...

I’d have trouble calling it friendly fire since I suspect the so called “rebels” are just more mohamamadmen doing their usual
post Friday prayer killing. Either way...friendly fire isn’t.

The Brits are probably lacking SNIPR pods, the ones that make ground features very clear even for zoomies at 15,000 feet.

These are just ordinary, downtrodden women and children with tanks, yearning for their freedom. Nothing to see here. We have a second amendment ourselves.

“NATO jets attacked a rebel convoy between these two towns Thursday, killing at least five fighters and destroying or damaging a number of armored vehicles.”

Accidentally?

I’m glad the Soviet Union never invades Europe, Otherwise the NATO forces may not have been able to stop them and all of Europe would be speaking Russian now—might be an improvement over Arabic.

Don’t feel bad.

Our State Dept. had no idea the Muslim Brotherhood might take over Egypt.

Well at least we don’t have to worry about Sadr causing us any trouble in Iraq.

I feel safe knowing we have smart people running this administration.

Maybe Gadhafi will let the rebels capture more tanks so NATO will destroy the rebels for him?

NATO seems to be incompetent to their present task so to speak?

We read on FR and elsewhere from the beginning that there were French, US and other NATO spotters on the ground to direct the air attacks. What happened to them? Did Gaddafi’s special forces neutralize them?

What makes you think they won't be speaking Arabic in Russia too? A good part of the old Soviet Empire is Muslim.

Exactly. The world is in a tailspin, pray for our outstanding troops whose only option is to follow orders, God bless them and protect them through these terrible times in our nation.

And they face a month’s “furlough” (no paycheck) next month, real great bunch of criminals we have leading this nation. I say physically run them out, all of them, start over.

ya and they said, they would paint the tops of their vehicles pink so NATO would be able to distinguish between them and Libyan regulars... duh... now everybody will have pink hoods.
