Congress Strikes a Budget Deal, Averts Shutdown
Fox News ^ | Apr 9, 2011

DEVELOPING: Congressional leaders, with barely an hour to go before a federal government, announced late Friday night they had reached a deal to fund the government through the end of the fiscal year.

House Speaker John Boehner, speaking briefly to reporters after talks had concluded, said the plan was to pass one last short-term spending resolution Friday night to buy lawmakers the time needed to prepare and pass the final budget bill.

How is it, then, that the Republicans went into the negotiations looking for $61 billion in cuts...and got $78.5 billion?

The $78.5 billion is the Dem number. They use the Obama FY 2011 number that was never voted on nor ever had a chance of passing. The real cut will be around $40 billion. This is just about $5 billion more than the initial $35 billion Cantor and Ryan were talking about before the freshman class and people like Bachmann and Steve King said we wanted more, i.e., the $61 billion. We are told that since half the fiscal year has already elapsed, these numbers are the equivalent of the $100 billion cuts touted by the young lions, Ryan, McCarthy, and Cantor. I read their book.

And they came out of them without the onus of "wanting to shut down the government"?

Onus? They announced from the very beginning that they did not want to shut down the government. And the reality is that the Dems would be the ones shutting down the government since they control the Senate and the WH. HR 1 was passed in the House, but the Senate never passed a budget bill, so the Reps were negotiating against themselves.

Newt lost the battle in 1995 because he went into the negotiations with a chip on his shoulder -- vocally wanting to shut down the government. He lost. He got no spending cuts. And he pissed away the conservative momentum.

More revisionist history. The shut down in 1995 was not a loser for the Reps. They gained two Senate seats and held on to the control of Congress thru 2006. The Reps forced Clinton into welfare reform and other budget reduction measures that he now claims credit for, i.e., surpluses as far as the eye could see and paying down the national debt. And Dole would never have beaten Clinton in 1996 with or without a shut down.

Boehner got what he wanted...a little bit more even. And he didn't damage the Republican brand in the process. Isn't winning what the game is about?

Yes, and we lost. That will become more and more apparent as time goes by. The Dems know the Reps are terrified of a government shut down, so they will use that weapon against them in the fights for the 2012 budget and the increase in the debt ceiling.

It is true that I have been here for only about 11 years (plus another year or so under my previous nick), but I do not think I’m a noobie.

I predict that there will a number of Reps who will vote for Planned Parenthood.

It depends on what is contained in the measure to defund Obamacare this year. Part of the money is included in the entitlement programs. I can see where the Dems can defend their vote. The vote won't be about repealing Obamacare, just the funding for this fiscal year. I predict the vote will be along party lines. It probably won't even receive 60 votes for cloture so that an actual vote can take place.

It is stupid to call this anything but a loss,a shutdown would have antagonized the army like nothing else.It would have given Republicans one major advantage over the liberals.

I don’t believe the Liberals can retake power in 2012 or win back some of the States,Prosser proved we could keep Wisconsin and California is so rotten........when it falls,it will destroy much of the Left’s agenda.

It is a matter of time but there has to be a decisive drive to get things done.

It sickens me that Boehner and Cantor come onto the House floor looking like they just stepped out of an issue of GQ, while babies are being murdered with taxpayer money.

You read all my posts on FR, and THEN tell me whether or not I’m a DNC operative, you idiot!

Sheesh people, Boehner got a LOT out of them. No increased funding IRS, forced vote in the senate to kill the entire Healthcare Bill AND another vote in the senate to kill funding for Planned parenthood... you all realize there is a lot of vulnerable DEMOCRATS who did not have to be forced before 2012 to vote on the last two items and now they will have to vote on them and if they vote against then they will be beat up in their elections and if they vote for they lose their base, something people need to learn is to play a game of chess, Boehner played Chess with Reid and Obama and pretty much has them check-mated.

If the people of this country are on our side, then the shutdown would not be endless. It would end when the Democrats cave.

Don't overestimate the people. In the present era, we can only advance our cause with independent support. However independents are not independent because they're wiser than the rest of us, nor is it because they reserve judgment until diligently analyzing the proposals of both sides. They're independent because they're fickle and easily swayed by irrational and emotional appeals.

Independents didn't vote for 1.5 trillion dollars deficits in 2010. Independents did vote in overwhelming numbers for the Republicans and their promise to cut 100 billion.

The majority of people in this country were on our side to get 100 billion in cuts. Boehner should have held out for 100 billion.

RE :"There is something else that Reid gave up. There is a chess game going on that may not be obvious. Reid agreed to hold votes on defunding obamacare and planned parenthood. So big deal, you might say; they won't pass in the senate. Correct, but McCaskill, Tester, and Manchin (all in increasingly red states) will have to vote or find an excuse to be out of town. And odds are (if they want reelection) their opponents will use their votes on these issues in campaign ads. These are not votes Reid wanted to hold."

I see Brett Biar on FNC Panel calling this a huge win for Boehner. One said "Democrats got rolled by Boehner" not only on the spending cuts but forcing the Senate to vote on those House passed items you mention (like Obama-care repeal )that will kill the Blue Dog democrats there.

The endless continuing resolutions were wasting billions of dollars themselves in endless new contracts and paperwork that those outside of this DC area have no way of knowing about.

Not a bad deal by Boehner considering the big battles are ahead.

When will we fight? What happens when the Dems use the same tactics on the 2012 budget? Do we worry about shutting down the government? What happens when the vote on raising the debt ceiling comes up? Do we back down again?

EXACTLY. The Young GOP Turks, need to have a rebellion NOW. Demand no raising any debt ceiling, unless Jesus comes down from Heaven and orders it in writting.

I agree with you, but Boehner has no gonads. We need someone who will take Ryan’s budget and make it happen. Boner is a spineless, gutless eunuch. I called his office a week or so ago and got one of his young, arrogant snots who made it clear that he didn’t care to hear comments.

Last year I would call “John Boehner's office” every now and then—and then one day his “young, arrogant snot” hung up on me.

He cultivates that forced resonance, uses spray tan, lacks the character to quit smoking, and plays hardball with conservatives while bending over for leftists.

Many more victories like today and China will own us.

Fifteen trillion in debt, seventeen hundred billion in defecit, and the hollow men are patting each others' straw-filled backs over a few tens of billions.

We had an election dsplaying our disgust. For this?

Gosh, if you can’t already see where eveybody stands, please believe me, it isn’t a mystery! This was said over and over during the Obamacare wrangling and votes. We saw then where everyone stands.

When it’s time to take a stand, *take a stand*.

obama played with the military. goddamn him for that.

Boehner likely should have taken to every airwave yelling about soldiers in 2 wars being used as HOSTAGES, given that the democrats favor that word.
