A wealthy conservative who owns a television production company in northern Virginia is very seriously considering entering the U.S. Senate race, POLITICO has learned.
Tim Donner, the founder of Horizon Television in Great Falls and a member of the Virginia Institute for Public Policy, is likely to decide on a campaign in the coming weeks.
"Hes going through a very deliberative process, talking with his friends, his family. Hes a couple weeks away," said Jim Dornan, an informal adviser to Donner. Hes really concerned about [President] Obamas policies and the impact on the commonwealth. Hes looked at the field of candidates and he doesnt believe that any of them represent those in the commonwealth that believe in the concept of a citizen legislature.
Former Sen. George Allen, tea party leader Jamie Radtke and Hampton Roads attorney David McCormick are already in the race for the GOP nomination.
Reached by phone, Donner referred all questions to Dornan, who worked on John Raese's Senate campaign in West Virginia last year.
Id be happy to talk to you when the time is right," he said.
In explaining his thinking, Dornan said Donner is under no illusion about how difficult it would be to knock off Allen, but noted that 2010 proved that frontrunner status can be fleeting.
"We also know that George Allen had a 30 point lead on Jim Webb," Dornan said, referring to the retiring Democratic incumbent. Hes held office for 21 years before 2006 and hes been lobbying for the last six. Frankly, while hes a nice guy, we think its time for new representation in the commonwealth.
Asked about Radtke, Dornan said, "She's been working in government since she graduated from college."
One of Donner's biggest immediate assets would be his ability to self-fund a campaign. While deflecting specifics on how much he might plug into a bid, Donner said, "Does Tim have personal resources? The answer is yes."
Donner has been keeping active in the policy debate through his website One Generation, where he's taped a video already noting that "the Senate has become the center of gravity in the battle to restore sanity." (Go to 1:45 in the below video.)
In the below video, he also urges viewers to support candidates who are "serious reformers" and have the "courage . . . to stand in the breach . . . who are not interested in the trappings of power."
Come on in let the folks see what you have. He can spend his loot if he wants.
It’s weird how Politico never does any farticles about “wealthy” commie lib politicians running for office.
The Senate has been our government’s dirty little secret since the 20’s.
Baseball ping?!
I know of Tim Donner as the host of what I think is the nation’s only year-round baseball talk show, Talking Baseball.

Anyone but that dumb jock doofus Allen.
Will Donner run? Or will Donner pass?
Enquiring minds want to know!
Like we give a rats @$$ about what someone in Connecticut thinks.
Fix your own state first.
