Some state lawmakers in South Carolina are working to make it easier for gun owners to carry concealed weapons.
A recent proposal unanimously approved Thursday by a bipartisan state House Judiciary subcommittee would allow any legal gun owner over the age of 21 to carry a concealed weapon without a permit.
Gun laws and the rights of gun owners were thrust into the spotlight again following the Jan. 8 shooting of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., and a shooting at a Florida school board meeting in December.
The state legislation - dubbed "The South Carolina Law-Abiding Citizens Protection Act" - was introduced last month by state Rep. Mike Pitts, R-Laurens, a retired police officer from Greenville. Pitts told The Associated Press that law abiding citizens already follow gun laws properly, and there shouldn't be any additional hurdles infringing on their rights.
"People have a constitutional right by the Second Amendment to keep and bear - not just keep, but bear - arms for self protection," he told the AP.

First, South Carolina repealed its absurd one-handgun-a-month law and now nonlicensed CCW is in the works?
It’s great, it’s wonderful! Can’t wait for the liberal shrieks to start.
Wisconsin should go directly to Constitutional Carry. They can’t pass licensed CCW while the Rats are away, since they can’t pass any appropriations and licensing would need budget money. On the other hand, just changing the criminal code would not involve any funding.
What is the problem with an 8 hour gun safety course in order to get a ccw permit?
You must have open carry as well. If you don’t, some anti-gun cop who notices you are carrying will be able to arrest you for “flashing” your gun even if it’s leagally concealed.
It’s another form of self-defense against the police.
They REALLY need to fix their reciprocity - SC currently DOES NOT honor “non-resident” permits...so even with a Florida non-res permit (SC & FL have reciprocity) I still can’t carry in SC as a resident of GA.
Angers me to no end that I have to remove my gun from my holster when I cross the border and leave it in the console.
Every constitutional right should have a 8 hour requirement before one can exercise it. (Sarcasm)
I shouldn't need a ccw permit. Taking the gun safety course should be my choice, a good one, but still a choice.
I look forward to passage of this bill.
This law should fix it. The reason SC doesn't recognize many other state's permits is because they don't have the same training requirements that SC currently requires.
>Whats wrong with a 8 hour course to buy a bible or news paper or to vote ect.

Well, I should think that if public schooling (in which enrolled students spend WAAAY more than 8 hours) is not sufficient education for the exercise of a right then it is the failure of the school-system, no?
Nothing, except how do you have such a requirement without it turning into a de facto registration scheme?
Wow! Doing stuff like that would probably bring the commies running back, and if not, well...
