Crowds Descend As Ohio Debates Union Overhaul
AP and NBC4 ^ | 2/17/11

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Crowds of public employees protesting a sweeping Ohio proposal to strip unions of collective bargaining rights are wearing red in an effort to steer public opinion away from the idea that unions are all-Democrat organizations.

The move came as union protests by firefighters, teachers, police and state workers were joined by a smaller number of tea party activists who support the legislation. The measure would end collective bargaining and replace negotiated salary schedules with merit raises.

NBC4's Patrick Preston said there was standing room only in the Statehouse Thursday morning and there was a line to enter.

He said there are far more people in attendance Thursday than Tuesday, including hundreds of supporters among the protesters.

I was at the State House today. The story is wrong. The TEA PARTY was wearing red not purple, yellow or OEA black.

THIS IS THE EMAIL FROM MY LOCAL TEA PARTY.

Our Senator, Shannon Jones, needs us to show support or her and her Bill SB5. Everyone, we will leave from the Country Kitchen (71&123) at 7 am in the morning and the bus will leave Columbus at arox. 3:00. Wearing Red is a great option. Signs are welcome.
Testimonies will continue into next week.

THE NEWS REPORTS ARE WRONG!!!

That matches what was mentioned in an earlier thread.

...they were joined today by more than 200 red-shirt clad tea party activists...

As one person put it: These are unlawful strikes and can be met with legal penalties.

Actually, by the time I left after noon, there were 7-8,000 people demonstrating inside and out at the State House. The numbers were fairly evenly split, TEA party pro and union anti.

STATE union THUGS inside the statehouse (see photo post #1) were wearing RED tshirts with a giant NO on them, some of Tea Partiers outside were wearing red also carrying small red signs!

It took me a couple minutes of research to confirm that..

Do they have to votes to pass it?

Majority in the House? Check.

Supermajority in the Senate, so that we don't need the squishes? Check.

Governor to sign it? Check

I’m in a union, let me tell you a quick story. Guy shows up at our work at 3 in the morning, takes ATM card, empties account. Buys cocaine and booze. Back at work Monday morning. Can’t be fired. My question at the time was: if you can’t be fired for that what CAN you be fired for???

Check out the jerk union thug at the SB5 protest in this related article and video at freedomworks:

TEA PARTY TAKES ON GOVERNMENT UNIONS IN OHIO

(caution: bad language in the video). These bums are panicked at the thought of getting kicked off the gravy train of cushy jobs with great benefits at taxpayer expense. They don't give a crap about whether the kids get an education or the state goes bankrupt. I hope this type of bill passes in every state.

That doesn’t stop them from striking. Maple Heights had a major strike when I was in school in the 70s and another a few years back.

They’re active in this. They are all over my Facebook with it.

I agree. However, the School Boards have the power to fire them. The collective bargaining agreements do not contain rights to strike. Research the history of the Mariemont School District and the strike of 1981..
