Jim DeMint would go for the presidency in 2012 if none of the other candidates were sufficiently conservative, CNN's Peter Hamby reports. The South Carolina senator has denied harboring such aspirations for a year, but in March, he's headed to Iowa. His closest advisers say DeMint has set a high bar for entering the GOP primary--he'll only step in if there's "a massive void" among the candidates.
DeMint, who was a major backer of Tea Party candidates, hasn't found a Republican 2012 candidate worth backing yet--aside from Rep. Mike Pence, who isn't well known and hasn't decided whether to run. Unlike in 2008, when he endorsed Mitt Romney early on, DeMint might not endorse anyone this cycle.
The national fanbase DeMint built during the 2010 primaries would help with fundraising, Hamby writes. He's also from at state that holds one of the most important primaries for Republicans.

Did he actually say these things publicly or did you have a private talk with him?
Any real conservative hasn’t a prayer of getting the nomination. The establishment will have their way.
Just watch. They will play with us, but a real conservative will not win.
They will sound conservative to rope us in, but whoever they choose will not be a conservative.
Despite what “they” may say, I don’t get fooled by anyone who tries to sound conservative who isn’t. I know who I will support and won’t support. It is based solely on that individuals record, action, votes and deeds. Right now, no one has announced, but there are a buttload of RINOs making lots of noise about running. We better damn well get a conservative or two in the mix, regardless what “they” think. They gave us Bob McDoles and Rudy McRomneys. We better fight harder this time.
“Is it true he backed Romney last time?”
Hopefully. Would you have rather him back McCain, or Huckster? There wasn’t much else except Fred and Duncan, and both of them never had a shot (and DeMint was a nobody back them - hence no influence).
I am no longer convinced the establishment GOP cares about beating Obama. They want the Senate more.
They have a bevy of people ready to dilute any conservative vote. They also have a couple pretenders in the mix.
Yet both would have made excellent presidents. They understand the enemy perfectly.
Have you ever listened to him speak?
If you close your eyes you could easily imagine that Gomer Pyle had gotten elected to the senate. That’s ok in his home state; most there are similar in their diction, but the media would kill him in a day if he were running for pres.
“Yet both would have made excellent presidents. They understand the enemy perfectly.”
Without a doubt. However, Fred didn’t have the drive in him, and Duncan just has a lousy first name. Supporting either of them was no different than supporting Ron Paul...they were no-names (as far as presidential politics was concerned).

That’s the kind of remark a northern liberal ‘elitist’ would make. Does his southern accent really bother you that much? He speaks very well in my opinion.
Here he is on the floor of the Senate...
