They do actually censor the suggestion list, mostly away from porn, especially potentially illegal porn. Somebody made a big stink about that a few months ago, trying to say Google was trying to prevent those searches, completely ignoring that you could still type the stuff in long hand you just wouldn’t get it on the list.
It’s funny how consistently Google inspires silly over reaction.

Oh, good point, they do that because SafeSearch is defaulted on. Lots of people find porn through Google with SafeSearch off, though :-)
I guess the point is that for them to make any kind of exceptions is a huge pain in the neck for them. They do it for porn because it’s something nobody wants to see pop up unless they’re really looking for it. God forbid it pops up accidentally when you are at work searching or if your child is searching. It’s difficult to do that kind of contextual filtering, though. To claim otherwise is just silly.
