Signs of doubt about Palin, from the right

The Wall Street Journal editorial page has taken Sarah Palin to task for her overreaction to Michelle Obama’s campaign against childhood obesity. This is not only notable by itself, but it has sparked similar criticism from other conservative sources. It’s interesting that she’s drawing this kind of fire from my fellow righties.

Palin, the Journal writes, sees a big government plot in Mrs. Obama’s campaign. On her reality show, she served her family “smores,” saying, “This is in honor of Michelle Obama, who said the other day we should not have dessert.”

The Journal editorial drew echoes from a couple of the writers over at Commentary magazine’s blog, Contentions, including former Bush staffer Peter Wehner, who pointed out that Palin’s hip-shooting reaction could undermine the case for smaller government.

Wehner: “Mocking the First Lady and portraying her anti-obesity campaign as several steps on the Road to Serfdom is exactly the type of thing that will turn the public against the legitimate efforts by conservatives to rein in the reach and scope of government. Ms. Palin might consider this before she takes yet another unfair shot at Mrs. Obama.”

A few days earlier, there was a shot from another writer at Contentions, Jonathan Tobin, who noted her gratingly defensive response to columnist Charles Krauthammer’s remark that her reality show appearances are unpresidential. Palin’s reaction: “Oooh. Sorry that I’m not so hoity-toity.”

In Palin’s defense, Michelle Obama has gone much farther than merely urging parents to provide healthy food for their kids, as when she blurted out, “We can’t just leave it up to the parents.” This isn’t mentioned in The Journal editorial. Still, the point of the piece was valid: Palin overreacted, and in the process raised even more doubts among those (such as myself) who don’t believe she’s electable.

David Frum is the lefty.

I started to write, "That's what I said, isn't it?"

And, of course, it isn't. I actually said David Fund.

But I meant David Frum. Do I get points for that...??? Or at least, avoid the stocks...???

all this silly criticism of Palin. Best I can tell, the woman still has never done anything wrong or taken a position that merits such attacks.

While she may not be the best candidate (which has yet to be proven), she has not said or done anything that is factually inaccurate.

So far she looks like the most true blue of constitutionalists and there is nothing that gives me reason to worry about her once in office.

She does scare the pants off the libtards, just the same.

LOL! A Bushie is worried about undermining the case for smaller government! Since when were the Bushies serious about having a smaller government anyway?

No I believe that parents that look to govt for stopping obesity are the problem.

So well said it needs to be bumped.

Wait a minute! Most of those listed in the article as putting down Sarah are “Bushies” or known RINO’s!

To the radical progressives in the MSM, they are the "right".

This seems to me to be a misstep. Taking on Michelle was a rotten idea.

Really?

Let's see. We have a empirical, American hating Socialist who had just been give $15 million of our tax dollars to dictate to us what we shall and shall not eat.

She says no more bake sales for schools (a centuries old tradition), No Happy Meals, rules and regs that hamper restaurants, ad museum - and says we shouldn't eat desserts - while we see her scarfing down ice cream, Slurpees, french fries, etc - not to mention her rather broad read end.

Then we have Sarah - in super shape - (maybe she should advise mookie to feed HER kids moose and elk meat) - and she shouldn't make any remarks on the dictorial edicts coming from a first lady - using billions of our tax dollars to direct our lives, right down to our dinner tables?

This added intrusion into our lives needs to be stopped before it goes further - and IT WILL. Wait until your overweight child doesn't come home from school - and you find out it's because the Dept of Human Health has taken them to protect them from YOU, the abusive parent who has allowed your child to be overweight.

Think Not?

Criticize Sarah who is pointing out the absurdity of this food-control agenda instead of the agenda and it's dictator - and you WILL see it.

The reason this country and our freedoms are in such danger is because people think it's unwise to speak out.

Good grief.

Most of the kids that are too fat are black. Manchelle even stated this along the lines of “Black children have fallen behind white children in this respect....” or words to that effect. For her, the whole thing is about race, as usual. My only regret about Sarah mocking Manchelle was that she left that part out.

Fast food and ignorance about diet are part of black culture. Otherwise, they’re “acting white.”

I agree completely with you.

To take the side opposite of Nancy is to defend the indefensible - teen drug use.

But for Sarah and Michelle the debate about the proper role of government is always a valid discussion.

I think you are right on to this issue. She also has to ratchet down that high pitch that she frequently uses.

another talking point of the far left - and people like you carry their water.

Ignorance or deliberate?

This frenzy is amusing. It’s obvious they are going mad at the thought of her even running and why would that be if they are so confident she is a lightweight? She needs to run and keep talking.

We need fresh thinking in Wash. DC.

Right on! Out with all of the entrenched politicians and in with real patriotic Americans.

Bottom line is, I want to see Obama defeated.

OK, how about Hillary, would that be good enough for you?

Just remember in the federal school lunch program French fries are defined as a vegetable.

I guess they didn't want to call them steak, who knew?
