The internet is pretty much busted anyway. It's following the same pattern as CB radio in the US. From '58 through the 60's CB was pretty cool. Then came the explosion in the 70's and it all went south.

When the net was nerds and geeks it was cool. Anyone remember before graphics when MIT had an ASCII coffee maker you could check on line and Pitt had a coke machine in the basement of the student union (IIRC - I was there but that was long ago) that did the same thing but better IMO.

Then the net exploded and EVERYBODY jumped on. Social networking is one of my personal peeves. Why the ding-dong do I want EVERYONE knowing where I am and what I'm doing?

In any case I'm predicting a coming bust in net usage - at least in the US - similar to what happened to CB.

Hopefully a new net will evolve and the UN and governments will leave it alone.

Same with computers in general. It used to be that only technically-capable individuals could use them. “Why can’t I get any sound out of this game? Oh right, it’s on the wrong IRQ.” (pulls cover off and moves jumper on sound card). Maybe those days could be annoying, but it kept out the riffraff.

“Then the net exploded and EVERYBODY jumped on. Social networking is one of my personal peeves. Why the ding-dong do I want EVERYONE knowing where I am and what I’m doing?”

Yes, what happened were that nitwits started using computers and then you had this sort of thing: “OMG liek will u b redy 2 go shopping with me GF?”

“In any case I’m predicting a coming bust in net usage - at least in the US - similar to what happened to CB.”

So you’re saying that when the Mayan calendar ends in 2012, a meteorite will hit the Earth and wipe out all computers made after about 1995. And then we return to using Windows 3.0 and Compuserve.

I appreciate the conveniences of today’s PCs, but if it had to come down to that, I could live with it.
