(CBS) More than a day after a CBS camera caught video of an unidentified projectile leaving a condensation trail off the California coast, the situation remains a mystery, with the Defense Department insisting that it was not a missile.

But Doug Richardson, the editor of Jane’s Missiles and Rockets, examined the video for the Times of London and said he was left with little doubt.
"It’s a solid propellant missile," he told the Times. "You can tell from the efflux [smoke]."

If it wasn't one of ours, the military was probably caught totally by surprise, and they would never admit it was a foreign missile. The political fallout would be tremendous, and they always fear that the public would panic. Besides, even if they knew a foreign sub was in our waters, what would they do? The might track it, but they wouldn't sink it and a missile launch would probably be the last thing they would expect.
The only recourse for them now is to invent a story that allows "plausible deniability", but they haven't done too well at that either.
I saw two of them yesterday, and I live in the midwest.
High speed upper winds caused many weird cloud formations the last few days.
Jet contrails took on these quick spreading, rolling, long plumes instead of the straight and narrow streams we normally see.

Almost as if that was some kind of scheduled flight path for overseas flights.

Hmm. I wrote the original history of the Trident program back in 1984 (”Trident,” with Douglas Dalgleish) and it sure looked like a D-5 to me.
The “missile” videotape was reportedly shot at around 5:00 p.m. on November 8, 2010. If I had to guess, I’d say it’s either a 757 or a 757....

Yes, we were. By a number of the same posters that are pushing the magic contrail theory, in fact.
The contrail itself would be wider at the earlier in time position, due to wind dispersal. So the appearance depends very much on the angle at which the object is observed, and the actual vector of the object. Hard to know any of it, although smarter guys than me should be able to come up with a good idea of the flight path given that we know the position of the helicopter and the direction of observation.
To me, it’s a rocket launch, plain as day. No way this wasn’t picked up on radar either. Somehow, everyone knew it was 35 miles off the coast.
It was big, and it’s being hushed up for reasons unknown.

To me, the spread of the contrail/plume to its left at it's trailing edge looks like what I'd expect to see a half hour or so back the line on a persistent airplane contrail. It doesn't look like what I'd expect it to look like a couple minutes back on a smoke trail.

The fact that the plane's movement is inbound (toward the viewer) heightens the illusion that the object is ascending in the sky.
It’s also possible that the US government was conducting a test in violation of an international treaty. By allowing it to be seen, and generating this sort of conspiracy speculation, they deflect attention from the facts. They can appear to be earnestly investigating a “mystery” and let their intel operations apparently take the fall.
“Hiding in plain sight”, as it were.
