LINCOLN — Gov. Dave Heineman dropped a post-election bombshell on Thursday, saying he was forgoing a run for U.S. Senate in 2012.

Advertising “The Senate's not my cup of tea,” said Heineman, who was re-elected Tuesday by a landslide to a final four-year term.

“I have the best job in America. Why would I give that up?” Heineman said at a press conference.

The decision by the 62-year-old Republican set off a scramble among potential GOP replacements.

...

Attorney General Jon Bruning jumped to the front of the line, announcing shortly after Heineman's decision that he would hold a State Capitol press conference at 10 a.m. Friday.

The next best job for Gov Dave is as candidate for President or Vice-President in 2012

Not Lee Terry. Adrian Smith or Fortenberry would be good.

I’ve wondered if he might be thinking about that. But a presidential run would also take him away from governing and he doesn’t bring a huge amount to the VP slot.

Senate 2012 Ping

Bruning has $1M already banked for this race. I think I can tell who the establishment will favor. As far as I know he is a conservative. He's part of the ObamaCare lawsuit.

I like Stenberg well enough but he was just elected to be state treasurer.

I don’t believe that he’s run for federal office before, so I believe that the $1 million must be in a state campaign account. Can he tranfer that money to a federal campaign accout? I thought that that was a no-no.

I still wish Heineman would reconsider. He would demolish Nelson. We have to start locking in our strongest candidates now for 2012.

From Omaha.com 11/4

“Bruning had raised over $1 million for a run for U.S. Senate in 2008 and then dropped out when Mike Johnanns, a former governor then serving as U.S. secretary of agriculture, announced that he was a candidate.”

I interviewed Bruning for our hometown paper in his first run for AG. My impression was that he would seek higher office and was an effective campaigner. I’d vote for him for Senate.

Nelson is a pretty shady character, but you’d never know it from the fawning coverage by the Omaha/Lincoln media.

Watch Ben run to the right so fast he trips right over Palin. This will be funny to watch Nelson and others like Claire McCaskill talk their way out of this. Maybe Manchin can teach them the fine points of dropping religious references and the use of a bolt action.

Osborn has a good record. But honestly, it's extremely frustrating to see so many conservative men who can't seem to stay married to one woman. The divorce may have been his wife's "fault", but there's plenty of blame to go around with those things.

Bruning has a Senate exploratory committee site up and running.

Oh, that’s right, he was running for the Senate for a few months there. I had plumb forgotten about that. $1 million is a nice little nest egg for a Senate run in a cheap advertising state like Nebraska.

I have no problem with Bruning, and he may well be our strongest candidate to take on Nelson now that Heineman is out, but part of me would love to see Jeff Fortenberry in the U.S. Senate.

Took me a few seconds to catch your “AuH20”. Duh. I like it.

I worked in PR for a New Mexico college for a couple of years. In the 2000 election, a professor wore a huge black and gold “Goldwater” button. It was worth it to follow him around to see the hostile reaction of his peers and the looks of puzzlement on the faces of students who had no idea who Goldwater was.

I hope that Nelson plans to run for reelection and thinks he has a chance to win. That way, he’ll try to curry favor by voting with Republicans on one key vote after another.

Too bad, Heineman may have scare him into retirement.

We don’t need him to beat Nelson though.
