Conservative Farenthold(R) Defeats 28 Yr Incumbent Ortiz(D)in TX27 Congressional Race (South Texas)
Project Vote Smart - Issue Positions ^

Posted on 11/04/2010 12:02:12 PM PDT by JeepersFreepers

The victory of Blake Farenthold (R) over 28 yr. incumbent Solomon Ortiz (D) in the TX-27 Congressional race demonstrates that a candidate with strong conservative positions can win in a majority Hispanic and Democratic leaning district. This victory contradicts the conventional wisdom that only a moderate can win in such districts. Farenthold has declared strong conservative positions in social, economic, international, defense and environmental issues including illegal immigration.

KEYWORDS:
Ortiz has run unopposed or faced little challenge in winning elections since his first run in 1982. He has been a strong supporter of government takeover of health care and has avoided having meaningful dialogue with his constituents on the issue. Farenthold has defeated an incumbent in a "safe seat" who apparently thought he no longer needed to listen to the people.

Too bad for Ortiz that this district is on the coast and doesn’t contain Duval County. Ortiz could have won if Duke was around to help. ... But thankfully, history and geography separates the two.

This race was part of our Texas "Trifecta"...Canseco (Conservative) won over career politician, extreme lib Ciro Rodriquez and Bill Flores beat out long time lib Chet Edwards!!! Woo hoo!!

Dr. Donna Campbell, who had virtually no national exposure, almost beat out old Lloyd Doggett.

Farenthold won by 799 votes. Ortiz may request a recount although he has not yet done so. Farenthold has declared victory although Ortiz has not yet conceded.

South Texas voters also defeated 3 Democrat state representatives including Ortiz’s son, Solomon Jr.
