LDS Bishop shot to death in California Church
Salt Lake Tribune ^ | August 29th, 2010 | Associated Press

Posted on 08/30/2010 6:33:31 AM PDT by Jenny Hatch

Visalia, Calif. • A Mormon church official was shot dead between services on Sunday, and less than an hour later, the man suspected of the crime also died after a shootout with police.

Clay Sannar, 42, a lay bishop with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Visalia, southeast of Fresno, died after being shot in his office, said Visalia police chief Colleen Mestas.

Soon after the first shooting, a caller identified himself to police as the shooter. Police responded, and there was a confrontation with several shots exchanged, said Mestas.

The suspect was hit multiple times. He was taken to nearby Kaweah Delta Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. He has not been identified yet. No officers were injured, Mestas said.

Tulare County sheriff’s deputies are taking over the investigation of the shootout involving the police officers. The sheriff’s department did not immediately return calls for comment.

Visalia police continue to investigate Sannar’s shooting, but have not identified a motive.

Openly empathizing with the killer.

As a lawyer, I would have thought that you'd understand but apparently not. Describing a person's motive is not empathizing with it.

No matter how bad the abuse might have been or was perceived to have been, it does NOT justify the cold-blooded murder of this bishop. No Flying Inman would disagree with that conclusion. It might explain why he felt that he had to take this action BUT IN NO WAY, SHAPE, NOR FORM DOES IT JUSTIFY THE MURDER.

IOW...if a person leaves "the church"...you believe they are hostile to your beliefs. And therefore...anyone who leaves "the church" you have nothing to do with them anymore.

Got it!

P.S. when are you going to give an apology for your despicable post suggesting that a FReeper did this murder?

The killer was a mentally ill anti Mormon

Well bless your little heart.

Actually you are attempting to provide cover here.

The killer was a mentally ill EX-mormon...that felt like he had been shunned by a mormon bishop.

Boy, talk about bi-polar. I don’t know how to post links, all I can do is cut and paste. But on a similar thread, where I made exactly the same comment, you recognized it for the black humor that it was, and laughed in response, as follows:

Man accused of killing church leader was former member of LDS church, felt wronged, brother says

How many stories would you like to see about people that were harassed, shunned, lost jobs, mentally beat up...by friends, family and "the church"...because they were thinking about leaving LDS, Inc...or in fact left.

You want to talk about hostility, single minded and people trying to convince you they are smarter than you? Announce to your stake you are having serious doubts and questions about LDS, Inc. Whoa!!

If you really are a Jacoby...you ain't that smart.

Most of them are just that — “stories” — with the supposed slights embellished, and a lot of pertinent facts left out, like facts about the storyteller’s behavior and overt hostility. Just like my kids. “Mom, he hit me.” “What did you do?” “Nothing.” Yeah, right.

Well, so much for those articles of faith where you can worship as you wish. A FORMER mormon, wanted his name removed from the lds roles......and the lds won't. The shooter was not an anti-mormon, he was a former mormon. He believed he was being shunned, interesting love and forgiveness.
Was he mentally ill maybe. Was he a killer absolutely.
You however need to get your story straight he was still a mormon because lds would not remove his name from the lds roles.

So ll you are now saying these people who have left or are trying to leave are liars. Wow, such love and understanding on your part.

“The killer was a mentally ill EX-mormon...that felt like he had been shunned by a mormon bishop. “

The killer DEMANDED that his name be removed from the LDS roles several years ago. He was mentally ill and he was an anti Mormon; he hated Mormons. Today’s Fresno Bee has the whole story which includes details of how the wonderful young Bishop died a hero.

Hey, I am from this area. Today’s Fresno Bee says the killer did have his name removed from the LDS roles. He was an ex Mormon and he was also an anti Mormon - he had a history of being an anti Mormon. In his sick mind, he had wanted to kill a Mormon Bishop for a long time and he finally did it. He and the Bishop he killed had never even met each other.

The murdered Bishop died a hero and I am proud of him. I am also proud of the way the Church is responding to this tragedy - with love, understanding, forgiveness and kindness.

It is sad that you are so wrapped up in hatred for the LDS Church and its members that you cannot even find it in your heart to be benevolent toward the victims of this horrible tragedy.

The widow - with 6 boys ages 3 mo to 14 yrs - is receiving help, love and kindness from all over the world. I am thankful to our Heavenly Father for His loving kindness - in Jesus Christ’s Name. Amen.

Not liars, per se. But often totally insensitive to the effects of their own behavior on others.

If people want to leave the church, they are free to leave. Are those who remain not allowed to disagree with or disapprove of that decision? If those who remain happen to love the person who left, are they not allowed to feel anguish over what they believe the person is losing?

And, if the person leaving begins attacking the sincerely held beliefs of those who remain, exactly what kind of reaction do you expect?

In my experience, if the person leaving displays a “live and let live attitude,” and respects the feelings and beliefs of those who remain, it is returned in kind.

My mother left. Nobody was mean to her. Until the day she died, they were kind to her. But, maybe that’s because she didn’t go around slamming their beliefs at every opportunity.

You're an idiot.......I was being sarcastic and I was thinking a mormon did it. That was the very first thing that came to my mind.

And guess what.....????? I was right.

You on the other hand just had to get your jolly's in pointing your bony finger at the Flying Inman's...accusing them of murder.

You and your fellow mormon's own that....

There was no abuse.

Again as a lawyer, you would know that a perception, whether true or not, can form the basis of a motive. Just because the murderer's father and brother said there was no abuse doesn't necessarily mean that it is a fact. Even if there was no abuse, it doesn't mean that the mentally-ill person couldn't falsely believe that abuse has taken place and act on it.

First off, I find it fascinating that you folks would answer the call to “Christian Jihadists”. Of course you’ve always seemingly enjoyed calling yourselves the “Flying Imams” so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.

Have you folks really forgotten the discussions re: the Haun’s Mill massacre, the murder of the prophet Joseph Smith, the Governor Boggs extermination orders, etc.. Really?

I’m in the process of a week long anniversary celebration w/ my wife. Thought I would check in & see what’s going on. It’s always good for a good giggle.

BTW, I’m quite sure the reference to the shooter as an FR member was in sarcasm. With the utter hated you folks often display for Mormon’s, is it really any wonder that some would feel this way? Have a great week, I know I will

I’m quite confident that I’m not an idiot.

And, the shooter was no more a “Mormon” than any of the ex-Mormon “flying inmans” who hate Mormons so much that they end up frothing at the mouth on every Mormon-related thread.

Some of the usual suspects here are claiming “abuse” as if it were a fact, and using it to excuse/explain the murder of an innocent man.

Denial...is a form that mormon's have perfected.

You deny some things your prophet Ol' nut job B. Young said was SCRIPTURE...You deny so many historical facts...about moromonism

You deny the stories of thousands of folks that have left LDS, Inc. Then you accuse them of being liars.

Wonderful religion you are a member of LL....
