As it poises for further immigration initiatives, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is struggling with festering internal divisions between political appointees and career officials over how to enforce laws and handle detainees facing deportation.
Under the Obama administration, the Department of Homeland Security has shifted its focus away from the worksite raids and sweeps employed during George W. Bush's presidency to deporting more criminals and creating less prisonlike detention settings. But ICE, a branch of DHS, is facing intensified resistance from agency middle managers and attorneys, and the union that represents immigration officers.
The internal conflict has grown increasingly public over ICE's plans, among them to expand a risk assessment tool to guide agents on detention decisions, cut down on transfers of detained immigrants, and open more "civil" detention facilities -- what field directors call "soft" detention.

Uphold the law!
The administration and ICE are playing this Two-Ends-Against-The-Middle game in order to distract the public from what both sides should do, enforce the law.
This is the kind of self serving argument that one often hears at navel gazing forum's about the state of the media. A left-leaning reporter who would not touch a story about Barack Obama's biography with a 10 foot pole, recites with a long-suffering air that he has received criticism from the left as well as from the right and therefore he must be evenhanded.
If this were a story about unrest in the Pentagon over the administration's conduct of national defense, it would be big news. But this is a politically correct subject and must be analyzed in a politically correct manner. It is not possible for the Washington Post to report the unvarnished truth: honest nonpolitical bureaucrats are up in a arms in outrage over the illegal policies of this administration designed only to advance an amnesty agenda.
I hope this explodes in “Fat Janet” and Obama’s face just before the elections!

My husband has been waiting for his employment green card for over 7 years. I joked back in the beginning that we’d probably be married with kids by the time he got it. 3 years of marriage and 2 kids later...When we married, Useless Bit** (my affectionate name for his immigration lawyer) told him not to switch to a marriage application b/c he would have to start over. For years we’ve been getting “in a few months” “6-8 months tops” “next year”...Meanwhile my stepmom applied for her marriage green card in January and got it in June.
He talked to his lawyer a few weeks ago. She was told by the State Department that there will be significant movement in the processing of green cards in September. If he doesn’t advance in the process we’ll switch to marriage application. She’s kindly agreed to waive the fees. Thanks UB.
Our biggest fear is that he and all the other legal immigrants like him will go to the back of the line when they shove amnesty down our throats. UB has the same fear.
I believe we’ll see significant movement in the process in September b/c they’ve been told to clear the backlog and make way for amnesty.
Predictably it will. It always does. One of these people is going to be released and commit some terrible act and the administration is going to own it. Thats why the ICE agents are so worried, they know how dangerous it is to release these people.

Former Border Patrol Chiefs Join in No Confidence of Upper Management
Brunswick, GA - 28/8/2010 - Recently, the union representing Border Patrol Agents joined the one representing ICE Agents in stating they have no confidence in the current DHS & ICE upper management. Now an association of retired Border Patrol Chiefs & Agents has stated their support of the two unions positions.
The Natl. Association of Former Border Patrol Officers, or NAFBPO (www.nafbpo.org) strongly believes that with illegal aliens entrenched in every single state of our nation, interior enforcement of our immigration laws is woefully lacking. This has been caused by a lack of resources, and continues to worsen under faulty operational policies and a non-willingness by upper management to enforce existing immigration laws.
NAFBPO is adamant there are two primary tasks that must be accomplished to improve our system for legal immigration which eliminating the blight of illegal immigration. These are a secured border and strong interior enforcement. NAFBPOs collective experience in dealing with border & immigration matters as well as an institutional knowledge dating back over a half century leads us to emphatically state that without these two tasks being implemented successfully, immigration control will never be possible. Buck Brandemuhl, retired Chief of the Border Patrol and a founder of NAFBPO says The U.S. has reached a critical crossroads in dealing with the illegal alien problem. This problem must be addressed now, as it is strangling our democracy and threatening our national security.
There are a number of steps required in addressing the two essential tasks. In the near future, NAFBPO will be posting a comprehensive immigration enforcement and reform proposal setting forth those steps that if implemened collectively, will provide a common sense solution to illegal immigration and a return to the rule of law
NAFBPO is the National Assn. of Former Border Patrol Officers, an organization advocating for increased homeland security through a controlled border and effective immigration enforcement. In 2006, a group of retired Border Patrol Chiefs and Agents formed NAFBPO in order to use our collective knowledge and experience to educate America to the realities of border and immigration issues, while actively working for no amnesty and working for effective immigration reform.
