Health care law gains support? Well, of course

| Cynthia Tucker

Here's news that's really no surprise: a new poll has found that support for the health care reform law has been gradually rising. The GOP hysteria provedas voters now know."

Opposition to the landmark health care overhaul declined over the past month, to 35 percent from 41 percent, according to the latest results of a tracking poll, reported Thursday.

Fifty percent of the public held a favorable view of the law, up slightly from 48 percent a month ago, while 14 percent expressed no opinion about the measure, according to the poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation.

The approval level was the highest for the legislation since it was enacted in March, after a divisive year-long debate. In April, the poll found 46 percent in favor and 40 percent opposed.

(The chart shows an average of several polls; the Kaiser poll reports support at 50 percent.)

A couple of things help explain the rising support. One is that the debate over health reform was ugly, polarized and protracted. When it lingered – sourly — in the news, the ugliness helped sour people on the very idea of health care reform. Once the debate ended, so did some of the hostility to the proposal.
The second thing is that Republicans over-reached in their exaggerations and hysteria about the problems the new law would cause: Death panels! Rationing! Now that people see the world hasn’t ended, they’ve relaxed a bit.

If Obama and the rest of the Democrats were better at politics and messaging, they’d remind voters that health care reform was critical not only for today’s uninsured but also for the future economy. Work-based health insurance is fading away as more and more workers are hired for short term contracts. The new health care law provides flexibility for a new economy.

KEYWORDS:
Cynthia is relying on the Kaiser poll, which I have never heard of and the graphic on her screen clearly shows the public support for Obamacare is still unfavorable by a significant margin.

If she thinks it's popular know, just wait until it really starts to kick in.

And they wonder why the AJC has been imploding.

You do realize that the biggest audience this ridiculous woman’s has is on FREE REPUBLIC? No one cares what this hackette has to say.

Besides, I thought President Mongrel was going “out there” to explain the bill? What ever happened to that? Oh yeah, he’s been busy being on vacation for the last 5 months.

The taxes and death panels haven't started to function yet. That was the evil brilliance of how the bill was odne. Delay the pain until after the people have forgotten about it.

We cannot let this be forgotten.

...you can expect more and more lies coming from the DNC about all sorts of polls. Their losing support quickly and without $$$$ donors their elections come November are doomed.
People can’t afford vacations...their not going to send in the cash to back a loser.

Cynthia once again engages in lazy journalism, by cherry picking one of the few polls that shows healthcare reform as favorable and then builds an article around it.

CNN and CBS polls have where people oppose healthcare by a much more significant margin.

Cynthia couldn’t be bothered to actually engage in journalism and write the article from a multiple polling standpoint as it contradicted her preconceived conclusion.

I don’t have a lot of faith in a poll conducted by a large health insurance company. They probably poured tons of lobbying money into passing this thing in the first place - this is just more lobbying in the form of a push poll.

in January, a hopefully Republican congress needs to get this freak Berwick up on Capitol Hill for a little torture session. This guy is nothing short of evil and as the defense of his previous statements will be a new chapter in Orwell’s 1984. This will be an excellent refresher course and any support or faux support for this horrible law will evaporate.

I think Cynthia looked at the wrong column when she read the poll results!

Jobs seem to be more on the mind of Tennesseans polled by the Commie Appeal.

They were offering free copies of the AJC at the K-Mart yesterday. I didn’t see anybody take one.
