The armored vehicle provided to the Santa Barbara Police Department is a 2010 Lenco Bearcat, Special Purpose Vehicle valued at $242,909.95. The cost was funded by a grant by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, through the County of Santa Barbara, Office of Emergency Services. No City or County funds were used in the purchase.
Modern urban police departments frequently are involved in high-risk tactical situations involving armed mentally ill or criminal suspects. This vehicle allows our SWAT and Crisis Negotiating Response Team to quickly respond to incidents involving: Gunfire, high-threat, or rescue. We train for in-progress shooting situations at schools and workplaces. CNRT trains to negotiate peaceful conclusions to volatile situations. The Bearcat provides an unmatched ability to respond and confront these situations without delay. Our purpose for attaining this vehicle is to: Save lives, protect our officers, and resolve dangerous situations quickly.
Here are specifications on the Bearcat:
·It is based on a Ford F-550 Super Heavy Duty truck chassis. It weighs 18,000 lbs, and is fully enclosed with steel armor. It seats 10, including the driver and front passenger.
·The Bearcat runs on gasoline, and can be operated by any licensed driver.
·The armor specification is classified, but the vehicle will withstand multiple hits from any available non-military grade munitions.
·The vehicle offers blast protection from many explosive devices.
* Probably will be used to track down cafe owners serving inferior chardonnays. *
LOL (Go get ‘em!)
Or liquor stores selling wine in a box.
“inferior chardonnay” very true and funny.
They could have used this in the 60’s when State Street was closed down because of protests and Bank Of American burning down in IV.
Santa Barbara has settled down a bit.
Or to knock down Joe Sixpack’s front door because he put recyclables in his regular trash.
I'm ready for them.
Those trust fund baby frat parties at UCSB can get a little out of hand.
Meanwhile the homeless have taken over the beach bike path and the State Street McDonald’s. The Harbor Authority threw the Naval Reserve out of their building so they could build tourist shops.
NIMBY reigns supreme.
Gunner
LOL! The beer partiers at UCSB had better watch out! What an utter joke.
It’s a bedroom for cop groupies on off days and a battering ram for food co-ops when it’s working.
Our police are militarized, and our military is a police force.
Federal prison?
I think it is used to surf at the local spots, cops tired of getting beat up by da locals cuz!
This may be standard issue if what happened to the Mexican Federal Police in June happens to our police.
I recently reviewed crime scene photos of this ambush in Michoacan and the vehicle they were riding in was literally riddled with automatic weapons fire. These officers where also armed with automatic rifles, and were wearing kevlar helmets and possibly level 4 ballistic armor. I noticed alot of their wounds were to the limbs, neck and face but not so much in the torso.
10 officers killed.
Folks, this is another fantastic reason for 2A. I believe the Mexican organized crime and drug cartels are afraid they would be hunted down by military, police and citizen alike were they try to do the same thing here.
I may be wrong, but I have always believed the Mexican Constitution did not have anything similiar to our 2A.
Any city with a genuine need for such a vehicle really needs a National Guard deployment, instead.
Is the round thing on the top a hatch, or an LRAD (Long Range Acoustic Device), like the Japanese use on those Sea Shepard fools?
Looks like a hatch to me, there’s a bar that seems like it’d be a handle.
