Not just any vacation, but six weeks of vacation. Who gets six weeks of vacation? And I presume it’s paid. No wonder they’re tanking!
Pretty standard in Europe. In America it’s the other extreme, where new hires only get one week (I turned down a job in SC because they wouldn’t give me a second week even though I was willing to take a 2% lower salary in exchange). In France everyone gets 5 weeks paid vacation, which is why unemployment there is 15% in boom times, 20% during recessions. I think we have a reasonable deal in Canada, where everyone starts with two weeks and extra weeks are earned (although I cringed at my layoff when I was a year and a half away from getting five weeks).
