BP Oil Spill Disaster: Containment Cap Removed After Robot Sub Collision

June 23, 2010

Oil from the BP oil spill disaster is spewing again into the Gulf of Mexico at nearly full force after a venting system connected the so-called containment cap over the blown-out wellhead was damaged in an accident with a robot sub, said Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, the commander in charge of the government's effort to control the 65-day-old spill.

COO Doug Suttles is dispatched to Florida's Pensacola Beach to oversee cleanup.Separately, Allen said two cleanup workers have died in unrelated accidents in the Gulf, the first deaths reported since 11 people died in when Deepwater Horizon drilling rig burned and began the crisis in April.

Allen said the small sub bumped into the venting system connected to the containment cap. That sent gas rising through the plumbing that sends warm water down to the cap to prevent solid crystals -- known as hydrates -- from forming in the cap.

"They are checking the containment cap right now," said Allen at a midday briefing in Washington. "If there are no hydrates in the containment cap, they will attempt to reinstall the containment cap and begin producing later on today. If there are hydrates they will probably have to re-run the pipeline and that'll take a considerable amount longer."

Before the problem with the containment cap, Allen said it had collected about 700,000 gallons of oil in the previous 24 hours. Another 438,000 gallons were burned.

Up to 14 controlled fires are being conducted every day, and they've already burned 125,000 barrels that otherwise would have drifted toward shore. At the site of the accident, two tankers have been collecting oil siphoned up from the containment cap. And huge ocean skimmers, the largest of their kind, have been scooping up 8,000 barrels of oil per day.

been reading some at the OIL DRUM site...one of the tech guys said something to the affect of...They cant keep it capped because there’s a break in the pipe deep below surface..the oil will erode the earth around it and cause the whole system to collapse....

I think there might be more going on here then meets the eye

Finding real men like that these days is about as common as finding Leprechauns in Italy. May Lord Bless that real man.

Yep - day one.

Rudy was right - he would have taken BP off the job right off the git go and figured out who in the world was best at this type of work.

Sometimes, FR is a chance to take my mind off the work.I hear you and I have just got to say, get back to work and make some bucks mister!!! We may disagree, but we are fellow conservatives at heart. I'm ready for a dance anytime, for sure, since I am off on vacation for the next three weeks. After that well.. I just got to get back to being a nurse and saving people's lives, etc I officially declare myself the thorn in your side :)

Looks like they’re attempting to place the LMRP containment cap back on the BOP right now.

It appears the federal government is fully in charge. At least it appears that way based on performance.

I don't have any “hard evidence” either, but one thing we know is: Alot of help was offered..worldwide and locally and turned down...

also, as to telling us ALL that,s happening...check the posts from LAST WEEK at “The Oil Drum”....(in a nut shell as I understood it)..one of the tech guys surmised they would have to remove the cap because of erosion caused by oil leaking outside the main pipe....if it continued, it could collapse the well itself and leave an open fissure that could never be plugged...

(just a layman here...but found it interesting that he was able to predict the removal of the cap....Ill try to find the post and add it here)

Looks like they got it back on but something is very crooked. I hope the BOP is not leaning over.

This is just awful. All that beautiful oil wasted.

It's not wasted, it's just floating in the ocean waiting to be picked up.

Oh, you say that the dispersants are preventing it from being picked up, so it can float to shore and destoy the ecosystems while the governor is being blocked from intercepting it safely and multiple ocean-going oil tankers are being prevented from sucking up what they can?

Well then, I suppose there's that.

Actually not enough people are taking this seriously enough.

I am seeing across the internet a growing black hole of almost anything about this crisis, and any real discussion of the worst case scenarios is being debunked as being over the top to the readers.

Worse that reading about the natural born citizen forums, and who knows maybe those trolls have a new job lately.
