1,023 Eurocrats pocket bigger salaries than David Cameron's annual income of £142,500.

EU Council President Van Rompuy earns almost £250,000

Included in the overall total are Herman Van Rompuy, the EU president, Baroness Ashton, Europe's foreign minister, José Manuel Barroso, the European Commission President along with six vice-presidents and 19 commissioners.

Last week, as Britain cancelled and suspended projects, including defence helicopters, a hospital, and a road upgrade, it emerged that the cost of Mr Van Rompuy's new Brussels HQ, where construction has just begun, is £263 million. The EU building work continues.

Research and information requests have also found that there are 19 European Parliament
