United States can be victors if we lose the World Cup (Sportswriter Roots for America to Lose)
Cleveland Plain Dealer ^ | June 15, 2010 | Norman Chad

Posted on 06/15/2010 9:32:15 AM PDT by Zakeet

I love the World Cup. And I love America — it’s my hometown! But I would not love to see America win the World Cup.

Frankly, we don’t need another feather in our already overstuffed cap. And considering soccer is the world’s game — and most of the world is at odds with America at any given moment — I think it might be a nice idea for Uncle Sam, in an effort to promote world harmony, to lie down in South Africa.

Now, in all likelihood, the U.S. is not going to be in a position to win the World Cup. But on the off-chance that Landon Donovan and friends have thoughts of reprising that Miracle-on-Ice thing — actually, “Miracle-on-the-Pitch” doesn’t have the same ring to it — I must implore my fellow Americans to tank.

Seriously.

The smart play, diplomatically, would be to lose with grace.

Americans are a pretty xenophobic lot when, in truth, we’re the ones who provoke an intense dislike. Most of the world does not threaten us; rather, most of the world is terrified by us. We’re a little too big, a little too rich and a little too powerful and, every once in a while, we muscle up and flex our military might in foreign lands.

There is much fear and loathing of America elsewhere. We seldom imagine what it would be like if the Army boot were on the other foot.

It's been sort of sickening to listen to the dolts on ESPN root for the African teams.

I read his column, and it’s almost so far out there you would think it was sarcasm, but it’s not.

I think this article was meant to be humor...it obviously didn't come off as very funny.

Sounds like the author of this drivel had his teddy-bear stolen by his “partner” last night.

I grasp from the xenophobic “nationalist pride” that other nations (who’ve long surrendered their military might) exhibit at the World Cup, that this is how these nations still “flex their muscle”.

Persons of all nationalities still chant for “their country’s team” no matter where they currently reside. They beat the crap out of “soccer fans” who are of the wrong nationality (some would call that xenophobia or racist or at least a hate crime).

Since America doesn’t get worked up over it, they can’t rub our face in it when America loses. It irks them that we don’t care.

In “the future” corporate entities ruled the world and battled in “Rollerball” tournaments.

Oh, the whole world is terrified of us.
Right up to the moment that the natural disaster strikes. Then eyes turn fearfully skyward and seaward, awaiting the flood of assistance, medical aid, food, and whatever else is needed for life to resume, supplied by (guess who).
Right until those terrified of us are themselves threatened, or invaded and subjected. Then eyes turn again skyward and shoreward, ferverently praying for the “EVIL” Americans to come to their rescue.
It is nothing but American might, American wealth, and most of all AMERICAN blood that has given the peoples of the world such freedom that they have. Yes others have joined us, but it is the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA that is the last, best hope of the peoples of the world.
This idiot, I am sure, would be happier elsewhere.

I gotta admit, America winning the world cup would be a slap in the face to the rest of the world, in a hilarious sort of way!

We beat all these nations that live and breath soccer every waking hour of their lives in a game that most Americans don't even care about and couldn't care less that we won.

It would be like saying. "Hey were STILL better than you even when we don't care and aren't even trying."

Kinda like when the Anaheim Ducks win the Stanley Cup.

Yeah, maybe if we become weak and helpless other nations might like us - look how well it's working and has worked for all the other weak, helpless nations throughout history.

There's a real, undeniable streak of masochism and the desire to be punished and humiliated in American liberals. It would be a lot better for the US and the world if they dealt with this by finding and employing a dominatrix rather than inflicting their sickness on US foreign policy.

Norman Chad attempts to use comedy in his commentary. He mostly does poker stuff. This is about par for his style, he’s just trying to get a rise out of people.

He’s seriosuly just a terrible, terrible sports writer. Ignore him.

That said, I’m stoked for US v Slovenia Friday morning. Nothing like waking up with a beer or three. :D

This pisses me off!

Americans are NOT xenophobic!

Americans are NOT Americo-centric!

If you go anywhere in the world, anywhere!!, you will find Americans.

Each European country has their own vacation destinations around the world. Americans don’t.

You will find Americans among the Brits in Tenerife, amongst the Scandanavians in Phuket, amongst the French in Tahiti. And you will find them in Ulaanbaatar, any random village in the Amazon, Tierra del Fuego, Tokyo, Budapest, Moscow... Americans are everywhere!

Americans are even hiking along the Iraq-Iran border for crying out loud!

Americans see the world as a place of adventure, mystery and romance. Even though we are only bordered by two nations, and many Americans live 10+ hours from either border, Americans as a whole are as widely traveled as most other countries.

Think about that. If you lived in Germany, you would be less than 4 hours by car from another nation. Most of the German people live less than 2 hours from another nation. And yet, in spite of the distances involved for most Americans, the U.S. is rated second behind Germany in terms of money spent abroad for vacations.
