GULF SHORES, Ala. -- State health officials warned beachgoers to stay out of Alabama's coastal waters Friday as reddish brown gobs of oil washed ashore for the first time, prompting a ban on fishing as well.

The announcement by State Health Officer Dr. Donald Williamson, along with the scent of oil hanging in the air along the shore, cast a pall over the summer tourist season.

What’s the SPF value of the petroleum?

Maybe around 1000 SPF?

Wouldn’t have to worry about sunburn.

Yikes, stripes, peepermint gum, if the smell was that far inland I'd say the whole area is a fire hazard.

Talk about giant inferno movie!

We fueled up on I-10 about six miles from Mobile Bay yesterday and the smell was that far inland

Hmmm,, I came across mobile bay yesterday afternoon,,, no smell. I live one mile south of I-10 and eight miles from Mobile bay, no smell. There is some fuel storage over on the Mobile River near I-10,,you can always smell diesel or creosote type smell near there.

“they survived, as will everyone else.”

I haven’t heard anyone say that people are going to die from oil on the beaches and wetlands. The concern is about the economic and environmental impact of the spill. What was cheap in the past is a fortune in today’s economy.

I live near the bay, and check it out most every day, and have seen nor smelled anything out of the ordinary.

The smell depends on the wind. Some days I’ve smelled the oil, but most days I haven’t. When you smell it, it is pretty bad.

I guess its because outside of “the State”, are all the losers. Deal with that.

My point, moron, is that you would bring up something as trivial as college football when discussing a far more important issue. Deal with that.

You aren't from here are ya. Any chance to slime the other team is acceptable excusing murder.

Saban was a big Gary Coleman fan, he even offered to give the family a personalized casket to use for his funeral.

One of my daughters was on the dance team back in the 80’s. They were invited to go to Ireland for international competition. There were some spoiled brats on the team who came from really wealthy families. They did not want to help everyone else raise money which at that time was over $100,000. Net result was that no one got to go which is a shame. Now, my other daughter was in the band and was invited to go to Austria and Germany for international competition. We worked like dogs raising that money. We still needed about $15,000 so some parents took out a loan so they could have this trip of a lifetime. Sure there were many on the team whose parents could have just written a check for their kids but they, too worked very hard. Different times, different results.

Thanks Obama, your tireless effort in McCartney parties and Calderon rain forest makeovers has paid off.

What a wonderful opportunity! My daughter and son-in-law would have had a coronary if they were asked to spend that kind of money. The girls really did work well to help themselves do all the activities that a dance team was involved in but not to that extent;o)

Actually, I don’t care what Obama does. He should certainly not tie the hands of these states or the oil companies to deal with this as they see fit.

It was the trip of her lifetime for my younger daughter. You see, she died in 2004.
