A petaflop...
And here I thought it was one more premise by Peta that failed to be widely accepted.
The Jaguar, a thousand trillion calculations per second, and they still can’t quantify the thinking process of the female of the species. (Go ahead ladies, I deserve it, but I couldn’t resist.) ;^)

Doesn't matter. I could have that and a dozen OC-3 connections and the driver source file I need would still be on a 286 ftp server using an acoustic modem in Zimbabwe and take 2 days to download.

“Jaguar, built by the Cray company and housed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, has a top speed of 1.75 petaflops per second, according to a bi-annual top 500 supercomputer survey. “
That there is pretty damn fast, I don’t care who you are.

Don’t be too dazzled. I’ve spent years in that business (couple of years ago, “I” had nearly 160 of those Top 500 on the list). There’s one hell of a lot of gamesmanship by vendors, and Linpack tests are not the best way to determine a computer’s true capabilities.
To: bruinbirdman
Fastest?
Is that the same as the most powerful?

That there is pretty damn fast, I dont care who you are. Doesn't matter how fast it is, Microsoft will still come up with an OS that takes six minutes to start up.

Theres one hell of a lot of gamesmanship by vendors, and Linpack tests are not the best way to determine a computers true capabilities.Let's not forget the acronym "MIPS" when used to test performance... "Meaningless Indicator of Performance" (as opposed to "Millions of Instructions Per Second.)

Pretty cool for it’s time.
