(CNN) - Three states - Alabama, Mississippi, and New Mexico - hold primaries Tuesday, and in one of those states voters could make history.

Rep. Artur Davis faces off against Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks in Alabama's Democratic gubernatorial contest. If the four-term congressman wins Tuesday's primary, he would become the state's first African-American Democratic nominee for governor. If Davis is elected in November, he would make history again, becoming Alabama's first black governor.

We’ve already made history with the first black president, and look how well that’s worked out.

When is CNN going to report on the necessity of the U.S. having its first one-legged midget as governor of a state, any state?

What makes them think it would work for Alabama when it is not working out for the US — since they are both Democrats this is not the time to take a chance!

“We’ve already made history with the first black president, and look how well that’s worked out.”

My thoughts exactly!

It would have been fine to have a competent black POTUS (Herman Cain, for example). But not 0!

A candidate in a 4 way race for the nomination might become governor if he wins the election next week and then goes on to beat another candidate in November Shock!

It will but Sparks is still dangerous. Remember that the same year Guy Hunt was elected was also the year in which Shelby unseated Admiral Denton.

Davis would be a cakewalk. Sparks would be a tough fight and I only see Byrne as being able to beat him comfortably right now. (I can already tell you the BCA is considering Sparks if James or Moore end up as nominee)

I thought I would never say this but the “black” man has already demonstrated to me that they are in this (political power thing) for the “party time” and not the leadership...another words...they are a long way from being a true statesman...yes...I said man!

Well, as has been proven by now, having a Black in control isn’t a sure fire road to safety. Hopefully this guy will be better, but then it would be tough to be much worse.

No more affirmative action in politics! Incompetence has no place in office. We’ve already seen how that turns out.

Not sure what his chances might be in the Dim primary, but Artur Davis is unlikely to be elected governor. He is the representative from the gerrymandered, majority black congressional district, and I hated to see him decide to run for governor after only a couple of terms. He’s probably as sensible a rep as will ever be elected from that district.

Davis voted against Obamacare, the only black legislator to do so and it brought some wrath upon him from the usual suspects. Of course, many think his NO vote had more to do with his planned run for governor than any strong opposition to Obamacare.

The OP is a former Alabamian and can say with utmost confidence that if Mr. Davis gets the Dem’s nomination there is no prayer of him being elected, especially after the people’s recent experience with The Great Black Hope.

Not entirely true.

Roy Moore as nominee would probably get Davis a lot of Republican votes in Jefferson and other high population counties.

Davis could beat Moore and I could see the BCA working to try and elect him over James. They wouldn’t have before that ad he ran but that ad pissed off a lot of people in the business community.

James would probably still beat Davis within single digits to low 10s. Byrne will throttle Davis. If Bentley had a chance to make it he would throttle Davis. Moore and Davis would be a fight and Davis could win.

Of course, I think Davis will have a tough time winning that nomination. He really shot himself in the foot by giving the finger to the ADC and the NSC because that gave Joe Reed and co. the license to go after him. It probably will cost him the nomination and give us the much tougher Sparks as an opponent.

Artur Davis only started voting sensibly when he decided to run for governor. He would have continued to vote in the same moonbat manner as Hilliard had he not run.

Davis always voted center-left as opposed to left like Hillaird except for one issue. Guns. Hilliard always supported gun rights. Was one of the few black Democrats to voted against the AWB. Davis had a pro gun-control stance early in his career and only began shifting right a few years ago.

That will kill him in a general. His posturing will be for naught. If he even makes it. I’m of the opinion he won’t. I can’t see him getting as much of the white primary vote as his supporters are claiming he will and I can’t see him getting the amount of black votes he will.

I think a lot of people are saying they’re going to vote for him who are not and I think Sparks wins the primary with a margin of 5 to 15.

This decade they’ve had trouble in statewide offices but have held the legislature convincingly. I think this year will be different. I think that they are going to have real trouble holding both houses (we will take a chamber) but I think more statewide races than usual are gonna be real contests.

Personally, considering the legislature controls everything in this state I’d rather have the legislature. I can say right now that on our side Shaw and Chapman will be re-elected without question and on their side Folsom will be re-elected without question (mainly because our candidate pool for that one is terrible).

Ag Comm will be a real fight. AG race will be too. If Sparks is the nominee the gov will be too but less so against Byrne than against the others, who I honestly think he’d beat, Byrne is our best guy. We should retain in most judicial races. I’d assume incumbency would win as it always does for the PSC but you never can tell. I also think Treasurer could turn out to be a fight too.

The thing is both parties are focused like laser beams on control of the legislature and while the overall electoral dynamics favor us do to Obama the statewide issue profile does seem to favor the Dems in this one (namely, using gambling as a way to save off painful budget cuts and I’ve always been open that I myself support gambling) and they did do a very good job in the legislature off neutralizing Obama as an issue.
