While I am an admirer of Massachusetts psychiatrist Alexander Vuckovic for his role in electing Scott Brown, his most recent missive to The Weekly Standard contains a contradiction that dogs many Obamacare critics: if we are opposed to Sarah Palin’s death panels, are we simultaneously for unlimited government health spending?
Many more Republicans have criticized the former than have proposed solutions to the latter. And unsurprisingly so, since none of the solutions to runaway spending are politically riskless.
Case in point: On May 7, Mark Thornton, a veteran of both the FDA and the biotechnology industry, wrote an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal. In it, he blasted the FDA for delaying for three years the approval of Provenge, an innovative new treatment for prostate cancer. “In the three years that it took to duplicate what was already known,” wrote Thornton, “upwards of 80,000 men lost their lives to prostate cancer. This is equal to the number of men killed in combat in the Korean, Vietnam and Iraq wars combined. Those FDA staffers who had a role in preventing the approval of Provenge in 2007 will have to live with this sin of omission.”

(CNSNews.com) – Dr. Donald Berwick, nominated by President Barack Obama to head the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the agency that runs Medicare, published an article in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), advising leaders of Britain’s socialized health care system: “Please don’t put your faith in market forces.”
The article, published in the July 26, 2008 issue of the BMJ, compared the U.S. health care system unfavorably to the British system, which Berwick said he was “romantic about.”

A study by the National Center for Policy Analysis shows that tax credits in the new healthcare law could negatively impact small-business hiring decisions.
The new law provides a 50 percent tax credit to companies offering health coverage that have fewer than 10 workers who, on average, earn $25,000 a year. The tax credit is reduced as more employees are added to the payroll.

There has been much talk lately claiming that “social justice” is a Catholic imperative. But just as Jesus taught about justice, he also issued a warning: “Beware of wolves in sheep’s clothing” (Matthew 7:15). By this he meant that evil sometimes presents itself as a good. Undoubtedly, words like “social justice” can be deployed in very dishonest ways. It is possible that people could use such words to cloak a very wanton intent.

We’ve already explained Obama’s promise that “you can keep your private health insurance if you like it” is pure rubbish. But, you say, what if I have insurance provided by my employer? Surely, I can keep that, can’t I? For most Americans the answer will be a resounding no. And here’s why. Obamacare requires that all employers with 50 or more employees must provide health insurance or pay a fine of $2000 per employee. Many companies, including AT&T, Caterpillar, John Deere and Verizon, are now figuring out how much money they could save if they just paid the fine.

The future of US medicine under ObamaCare is already on display in Massachusetts. The top four health insurers there just posted first-quarter losses of more than $150 million. Most of them blamed the state's decision to keep premiums at last year's levels for individual and small-business policies, when they'd proposed double-digit hikes to match the soaring costs they've seen under the state's universal-coverage law.
The companies have gone to court to challenge the state's action -- it apparently had no basis for its ruling beyond the political needs of Gov. Deval Patrick. If they win, Bay State health premiums will continue their rapid rise; if they lose, they'll eventually have to stop doing business in Massachusetts -- and the state will be that much closer to a "single payer" system of socialized medicine.
