Jobpocalypse now (5 million Americans are ‘long term’ unemployed. Gov't puts off the problem)
New York Post ^ | 05/24/2010 | Catherine Curran

Posted on 05/24/2010 6:43:49 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

This week, the Senate is expected to extend jobless benefits to more than 5 million Americans through the end of the year. It is the sixth time in nearly two years that they’ve expanded or extended unemployment benefits — putting off, again, a day of reckoning our political leaders seem unwilling to face.

With the national unemployment rate at 9.9% — and 9.8% here in New York City — officials are afraid of what will happen to our cities, our welfare rolls and our struggling economy if these long-term unemployed are no longer given government assistance.

But we pay for this feint in other ways. The government shelled out $140 billion in unemployment benefits last year to an estimated 21 million people. That price tag is likely to increase this year.

This is no ordinary jobs crisis. Compared to other eras, our long-term unemployment numbers are staggering.

Back in the grimmest days of the 1980s recession, the share of those out of work for six months or more never rose above 26%. Today it stands at nearly half the roughly 10 million Americans seeking jobless benefits. In New York City, more than 145,000 are longt-term unemployed.

And economists say this extend-and-pretend policy may be exacerbating the employment problem. Much like housing programs that have kept people in homes they couldn’t afford — and kept payments flowing to banks — when renting might have been a sounder financial choice, the current long-term handouts don’t address the larger economic issues. They don’t give people enough money to increase consumer spending, and do nothing to put people back to work in high-paying jobs.

I have a great idea!!! Let’s have an amnesty for illegal alien criminals who invaded America!

FACT-— During “Operation Wetback” Eisenhower ousted 1-2 million Mexicans. Some were legal but back then things got done
WIKI
Operation Wetback was a 1954 operation by the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) to remove about one million illegal immigrants from the southwestern United States, focusing on Mexican nationals[1].
[edit] History

Burgeoning numbers of illegal Mexican immigrants prompted President Dwight D. Eisenhower to appoint his longtime friends, John Cox and General Joseph Swing, as INS Commissioner. According to Attorney General Herbert Brownell Jr., Eisenhower had a sense of urgency about illegal immigration upon taking office. In a letter to Sen. J. William Fulbright, Eisenhower quoted a report in The New York Times that said, “The rise in illegal border-crossing by Mexican ‘wetbacks’ (rooted from the watery route taken by the Mexican immigrants across the Rio Grande) to a current rate of more than 1,000,000 cases a year has been accompanied by a curious relaxation in ethical standards extending all the way from the farmer-exploiters of this contraband labor to the highest levels of the Federal Government.”[2]

The operation was modeled after a program that came to be termed the Mexican Repatriation, which put pressure on citizens of Mexico to return home during the Great Depression, due to the economic crisis in the United States.

Let's throw 10,000,000 law abiding people on the streets. Let's make them beg. Just ordinary families, who played by the rules, trusted the government to simply leave them be. They paid taxes, all the little fees, all the monthly bills. They bought houses they could afford, never got too deep into debt, who ALWAYS worked, who rated themselves in society by the fact that they ALWAYS had a job. Let's tell them "Neener, Neener, fooled you!" Let's let them starve.

Prophets used to go into the desert and live on locusts for 40 days to gain knowledge. Being one of the long term unemployed for the first time in your life is like that. You gain insight, after the first 50 rejections, and, like a Viet Nam vet, you want to tell everyone, "YOU DON"T KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE!" The new buzz words, "just lower your sights..." makes you want to rip out throats. Whats the point of working even if, after all the cuts, you're still going to starve, just more slowly?

Once you prod the Dragon out of his cave, it's hard to tell who is going to get eaten. Wars never go as planned. Even Lord Obama knows this. He's on a knife edge, as is the country.

So, yes, by all means, let's do something MASSIVE, and put 17% of the workforce out on the streets with nothing to eat. What could POSSIBLY go wrong?

Bad for USA ....good for Democrats.

They can only find opportunity in their fellow American’s misery. That’s why the first depression took 16 years to abate....they kept re-electing FDR...

FACT #2
Franklin D Roosevelt the big lib-socialist booted out a few million Mexicans (some were legal) during the Great Depression. Why? Because not enough jobs for real Americans

Mexican Repatriation
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mexican Repatriation refers to a forced migration that took place between 1929 and 1939, when as many as one million people of Mexican descent were forced or pressured to leave the US. (The term “Repatriation,” though commonly used, is inaccurate, since approximately 60% of those driven out were U.S. citizens.)[1] The event, carried out by American authorities, took place without due process.[2] The Immigration and Naturalization Service targeted Mexicans because of “the proximity of the Mexican border, the physical distinctiveness of mestizos, and easily identifiable barrios.” [3]

The Repatriation is not widely discussed in American history textbooks;[4] in a 2006 survey of the nine most commonly used American history textbooks in the United States, four did not mention the Repatriation, and only one devoted more than half a page to the topic.[4] In total, they devoted four pages to the Repatriation, compared with eighteen pages for the Japanese American internment.[4]

These actions were authorized by President Herbert Hoover and targeted areas with large Hispanic populations, mostly in California, Texas, Colorado, Illinois and Michigan.

Two things:

1. I thought it was only 9.9%. ;)
2. Sometimes it is better to get the surgery than to just hide the pain with drugs. It just gets worse and when the drugs no longer hide the pain it could be incurable. Pain actually has a function.

Unemployment extensions are merely hiding the problem with drugs.

ASE Master mechanics are needed everywhere. One of the few jobs in the USA you can’t outsource.

The man hiding from his employer who’s looking to hire ought to be reported. But I highly doubt if the DOL will do anything about it.

Unemployment itself is the symptom. UI is a palliative, and not a good one. It's a reaction to the collapse of the financial system. Stock prices on Wall Street have no relation to actual company values. It's just incestuous masturbation. Why should a company make something when no one is buying? The only growth industry is societal control. (Witness government hiring.) What other industry would you invest in that isn't being targeted for impending Federal takeover?

The Feds will keep pulling numbers out of their rectums to show that somehow black is white and slavery is freedom. It's already incurable. We are screwed, tight. It's going to be interesting when all those federal, state and local workers discover they are going to starve when they retire because all the unfunded mandate pension funds are vapor and smoke...

But on what grounds ?

It is a violation of law for any person to conceal, harbor, or shield from detection in any place, including any building or means of transportation, any alien who is in the United States in violation of law. HARBORING MEANS ANY CONDUCT THAT TENDS TO SUBSTANTIALLY FACILITATE AN ALIEN TO REMAIN IN THE U.S. ILLEGALLY. .The sheltering need not be clandestine, and harboring covers aliens arrested outdoors, as well as in a building. This provision includes harboring an alien who entered the U.S. legally but has since lost his legal status.

Section 274 felonies under the federal Immigration and Nationality Act, INA 274A(a)(1)(A): A person (including a group of persons, business, organization, or local government) commits a federal felony when she or he:
* assists an alien s/he should reasonably know is illegally in the U.S. or who lacks employment authorization, by transporting, sheltering, or assisting him or her to obtain employment, or
* encourages that alien to remain in the U.S. by referring him or her to an employer or by acting as employer or agent for an employer in any way, or
* knowingly assists illegal aliens due to personal convictions.

The POTUS IS A FELON!

I don’t know if you know this, but I bought a small farm and home in rural central Kentucky on a handshake in October of 2008. It closed in August of 2009 (and uncle Sam gave me $8,000 for doing it). My wife and I moved out of a five bedroom home in an upper class suburb of Seattle in September of 2009 and sold most of the furniture, etc. We moved into a one bedroom condo across the street from my corporate office and put some things into a storage space.

On a side note, we rented for several years because we saw the housing bubble for what it was. It also made it easy to move at will.

The last two weeks of June we are cleaning out the storage, removing everything non-essential from our condo and driving a U-Haul to the property in Kentucky. I will attempt to telecommute, find a “travel” job or otherwise make a living while we wait out this mess. We can be completely self sufficient in Kentucky but we don’t really expect it to get that bad (but believe it is possible).

The important thing is that our new place is 80 miles from the nearest urban center. I firmly believe the cities are going to be very bad places to be in the very near future.

I hope I’m wrong. If I am we’ll be able to build our dream home on this property and enjoy having the kids and grand kids over for visits, walks through the woods, hunting, etc. But just in case, it works well if things go the other way. Very well, actually.

I call it Galt’s Plateau.

Whatever you subsidize you get more of................

I guess that's why in 2008, 947,340 temporary 'guest' workers were brought into the US, along with 396,265 green cards.

Currently 125,000 new legal workers (a combination of green cards and guest workers) are brought in the US each month.

Something many people forget is that which can't be outsourced can be filled by a guest worker, and more and more often is. See post # 70.

I suppose a few around here will get upset, as this info suggests there is work out there.... but it's the facts

I am not at all upset. I repeat, I think quite a few "unemployed" are working off the books for cash, and therefore, can do without the taxpayer sponsored check. Just like the "uninsured" never go without needed health services.

“And every liberal I know is still just as stupid as they were when they voted for Obama the first time.”
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Well, I had a conversation about four hours ago with an 88 year old FORMER Obamabot. A year and a half ago he was acting as though he really believed that the messiah had arrived and missed no opportunity to blame everything wrong in the world on G.W. Bush but this morning he didn’t utter a peep of protest when I said that this is the MOST corrupt administration and the worst president in the history of America. He is utterly and completely disillusioned and is worrying about his pension now instead of defending Obummer. I told him things could be worse and he asked how, “You could be young”, I replied.

I believe that there has been at least 4 U.S. senators that were found to not have the proper citizenship at the time of their election. Their elections were voided. obama falls under the same rules per code 3501. The votes cast for the “ineligible ‘ Senators were deemed void. and the office wwnt to the next person with the majority votes ( of remaining votes). As obama is NOT a Natural Born citizen per U.S. Constitution his election needs to be voided. As much as I dislike McCain he is the LEGAL President of the United States.
