HOUSTON (KTRK) -- There's a warning about a trick a group of men is using to lure women and rob them. They set up a fake road block on Woodson Park near Lake Houston Parkway in northeast Harris County and attacked a woman who was driving by.

What happened to this woman and her daughter was so frightening she says they relive it every day.

Woodson Park Drive near Humble is very familiar to a woman ABC13 isn't identifying. She lives nearby. But on the night of April 22, something wasn't right.

"It was late at night; it was dark," she said.

There was something unfamiliar.

"Cones were all the way across, all the way across," she said.

It was a precursor to something violent.

"I thought they were going to kill us," she said.

She and her teenage daughter were on their way home that night when they came upon cones blocking the entire street.

"So that meant I couldn't even go in that lane," she said.

Within seconds, three to four men ran out from the trees and surrounded the car. One had a pistol, another was trying to open the door, and the one on her side had a shotgun and was yelling.

"Get out of the car, get out the MF car," she recalled him saying.

"what about an anti-carjack device that would, at the flick of a switch, ‘arm’ the car by electrifying the shell of the car. if anyone outside touches the door handle... zaaap!"

Enterprising South African inventors have developed some real-world anti-carjack devices, like the one that acts as a flamethrower from under the driver's door.

In 1997, I was driving from inside the Loop to the Fluor office in Sugar Land on the Southwest Freeway. I saw this one car behind me with wig-wags going, and not passing. Only thing was it looked like a beat up Honda or Toyota, not like anything in the HPD inventory. I did not pull over for the vehicle. He eventually exited, sitting as low as possible in his vehicle so I could not get a look at him. Later that afternnon HPD informed me that I was right not to pull over for such a vehicle, since only a marked vehicle can execute a traffic stop. They considered the joker clearly bogus. If they catch such a joker, he needs to have a little “accident” when being put in the squad car. HPD rank and file do not take kindly to such jokers.

No, it means you should have driven over the cones, and failing that, over the guys who came out of the trees.

Both women were screaming, she started honking the horn, threw the car in reverse and was able to get away -- but not before the attackers broke both the front windows and even fired a shot.

Smart lady. Quick thinking that almost certainly saved her life and the life of her daughter.

That will be good to know when we move to Houston soon. But, in Alabama, the State Troopers use many unmarked SUV's. And everytime you see one, he has a "customer" making a donation to Al.

ACLU types and I’ll bet even some law enforcement groups would probably call it a kind of man-trap.

Not to mention the lawsuits if the thing is armed and the owner’s own kid or wife or mother grabs the door.

We know it wasn’t SWAT guys, cuz no dogs were shot.

And the victims weren't shot either.

"Cones were all the way across, all the way across," she said.

Since the windows are already rolled up & the doors are locked, this is the time that the gun comes out of the purse and into the lap.

You could always get the South African-made flame thrower package for your car.

I think the same company also made/makes a machete version that cuts the car jacker’s legs out from under him.

FYI, harbinger of events to come. "False checkpoints" were a hallmark of the Bosnian Civil War.

The problem is knowing a false checkpoint from a real one, before they have the drop on you.

"False checkpoints" were a hallmark of the Bosnian Civil War.

I was in BiH in the early nineties. My friend's husband would scare her and me with the "watch out for chetniks" when we'd drive from there to Croatia.
