Also, part of his (and Rep. Ryan) appeal is that they are not retreads. None of the 2008 GOP candidates should run again. As I've posted on FR several times, the GOP needs to look at Lt. Governors, AG’s SOS’s, and US Rep's for presidential candidates. The ‘he's earned it’ mentality got us Bob Dole and John McCain, and both lost badly.
Ok, Ronald Reagan won on his third try, but he's a unique and special case that will never be replicated and he last won an election 26 years ago; the electorate has changed since then.
Rep. Ryan seems to have an excellent grasp of economic and social issues. AG Abbott seems to have an excellent grasp of legal and social issues. Together, they offer a great combo. Geographically, WI and TX are a sweet combo for the GOP nationally, as the GOP needs to pick off a couple Midwestern states, especially if IN, NC, VA and FL voters brain-fart again in 2012 like they did in 2008. Abbott being AG from TX should cement the South.
Having two new faces should be an advantage in 2012; at a minimum, there won't be a built in polarizing force with a newbie like there would be with other candidates, and that will be critical in getting elected and getting an agenda passed.
I’m buying your argument, except that RR won on his SECOND try.
