African American Tea Party Candidate Upset With Cohen Comments
FAST FACTS:
* Congressman Steve Cohen says Tea Party hostile to anybody not "George Wallace clone" * Cohen's African American Tea Party opponent upset * Tea Party Candidate hopes to benefit from Cohen/Herenton battle
(Memphis 04/04/2010) More sparks fly in the race for the 9th congressional district. Congressman Steve Cohen is said to be out of touch and this time the candidate throwing the punches is not his fellow Democratic opponent, Willie Herenton.
The congressman's recent appearance on an internet radio talk show has some crying foul, including another candidate vying for his job.
Charlotte Bergmann and her supporters are forced to watch the weekend parade in Hickory Hill as the man she hopes to unseat and other current political office holders ride in it.
She requested to participate as the Republican's Tea Party candidate for the 9th Congressional District but was turned down. She says organizers told her political candidates weren't welcome.
That's the second time she's been dissed this week.
"I was very offended by Congressman Steve Cohen's comments because the Memphis Tea Party and the various tea party organizations have been really great to me as an individual, as a Black person," said Bergmann.
Bergmann is talking about U.S. Congressman Steve Cohen's 3 minute interview on The Young Turks internet radio talk show and his description of the Tea Party movement.
Cohen said, "The tea party people are kind of like, without robes and hoods."
He added, "They have really shown a very hard core angry side of America that is against any type of diversity."
Cohen referred to Tea Party members as an angry mob and said they show hostility to anyone who's not a "George Wallace clone".
Bergmann calls Cohen's comments despicable and says Cohen is way off base. She says they're angry but for good reason.
She said, "We share a common language it's called the constitution and what we want to do is to ensure that our taxes do not overwhelm us and that government doesn't intrude in our business."
Bergmann says she'll watch as Cohen and Herenton battle it out for the Democratic nomination. She expects they'll spend the next few months beating up on each other.
"I hope they do. And, the bloody one will come and face me. I will be the man standing there saying come and face me in November," said Bergmann.
Bergmann will face the winner of the Cohen/ Herenton race in November.

Btt
It’s time to fight back.
No allowing the left to spew their lies.
Their most outrageous comments MUST be answered EVERY time.
OK folks ... we had better learn to use these POS people and their words or we're sunk.
If the Tea Party (when did THAT happen ??) .. is predominantly white, that can only mean blacks don't agree with the platform.
The Tea Party platform seems to be a basic and simple comprehension and motivation for a smaller government and free-er America.
If blacks don't agree with that, they ARE part of the problem ... part of the enemy.
We had better learn that what they say is really an identifier .. a projection .. of themselves.
Not long ago Breitbart was at a rally and an SEIU protester shouted to "Get him out of here or we're both going to jail"
Dear, dear patriots .... let's start getting busted for busting arrogant, commie heads.
Cohen sounds like a sleazy politician who believes the regressives propaganda. What a looser. Hope he looses the election as well.
To bad I don’t live in Memphis anymore. But, then I wouldn’t be able to vote for Dr. Benishek who’s running against Bart Stupak.
People from all walks of life show up at the tea parties. The media goes out of it's way not to get these people on camera. It goes out of it's way to scare blacks away as well by calling the groups "angery racists."
Things are not always as the MSM makes them seem. For every person attending a Tea Party there are millions more who wish they were there.
We have been, the MSM just ignores us and labels us as racist. While reporting the likes of steve kiss obama’s butt cohen’s remarks as gospel. The demrats have their marching orders, and that is to play the KKK and race card.
Well I for one can’t afford to be. First I’m a Christian and practice the Golden Rule as much as possible. Second I have a bi-racial great granddaughter who has her great grandma twisted around her tiny 5 year old fingers.
We can’t pre-pick our race, but we can determine what we believe, and what principles will guide us in life.
Best tagline on the subject:
“You’re just calling me a racist because I’m white.”
When you think about what the union thugs did to the Black guy who was protesting with the TEA parties (beat him to a pulp and the media ignored it), it seems the biggest threat is coming from the commie side if Blacks do join. They are threatening them...that is what all this media propaganda is meant for.
George Wallace was a Democrat. What a dumb&ss.
Steven Cohen is a light-skinned white ,who speaks in a negro
dialect when he has to.
LOL, I’m as lilly white as a snow haired granny of Celtic decent can be. And I’ll be voting for Charlotte. I checked her credentials with higher ups, she is legit.
Like when Holder called us a nation of racial cowards, he and the libs are really talking about themselves.
Yep. Imagine what the left wing race baiters would do to a group of black Tea Partiers. If I were a black Constitutionalists, I'd be putting my family in danger just for expressing myself.
The left needs to keep the blacks locked up in their inner city cages, dumbed down, and eating government cheese to lock up the vote. If they don't vote themselves food, they don't eat. They're more enslaved today than they ever were, because this time it's their souls that are in bondage.
Did anyone remind Cohen that George Wallace was a Democrat?
Just the fact that Cohen spoke on The Young Turks speaks columes about this morality and atititudes.
They suck!
Actually, if you look at the latest surveys released (such as Gallup), people who identify themselves as “tea party” supporters have demographics that generally match the country as a whole.
