WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court on Monday refused to let a high school student sue over school officials' refusal to let her play an instrumental version of "Ave Maria" at her graduation, a decision one justice says could lead to wide-ranging censorship of student speech.

Alito was the justice who apparently wanted to hear the case. Alito, clearly is one of the good guys.

Today in America's public schools, you can talk about the importance of "homosexual love", but you can't perform the music of your choice. The Republic is lost.

This is why unfortunately we need to kill public education in this country. I know that ALL the Founders favored public education, but apparently they never envisioned this crap.

You only have free speech in this country if you’re a left-wing flag-burning homosexual pornographer.

"I know that ALL the Founders favored public education"

Remember, the public school system that we have today - by in large - is the construct of a former US Congressman and Massachusetts' legislator/educator named Horace Mann. Mann wasn't even born until close to 1800, and his public school theories weren't even articulated until well into the 1830's.

I'm not sure if I'd agree "all the founder supported public education". I'm not sure if any articulated a system similar to what Mann advocated, FWIW.

Vouchers now! No tax dollars to fund anti-American anti-Christian schools that burn money and produce pathetic results.

They told her she couldn't perform an instrumental? That is beyond extreme.

“The federal courts threw out the lawsuit, with judges saying it was reasonable for a school official to prohibit the performance of an obviously religious piece.”

Then I guess they better not play any Bach, Brahms, etc.

Eediots.

Ah but there’s precedent for this. (Hitler wouldn’t have let kids play instrumentals composed by Jews.)

Some of the Democrats among the high school faculty would no doubt be traumatized by an instrumental version of “Ave Maria”. Democrats are highly sensitive, doncha know? They’re also apparently hard of hearing, because they’re incapable of hearing the public.

I like Ave Maria...

Its a beautiful peice of music...

Why the STUDENT at a STUDENT event could not showcase her own talent and bless the other students and the audience is unConstitutional...

I thought the idea was to let the children have “rights” ???

Alas, the Constitution rather PROHIBITS the government’s jack booted thugs from even deciding what is or is not “religious”. It’s not their job. That we have Justices who think it is means we need to change some things

The Founders? As I understand it, the first support for “public” education was in the form of a voucher.

I know one public high school band that plays Amazing Grace before every football game. The band and the choir also perform traditional carols and hymns at their Christmas concert and there’s usually a religious story to explain one or two of the pieces. There’s also Christmas trees throughout the district campuses.

Well, I've done the research. To a man, they all supported what they called "public schools," as opposed to "private schools" (i.e., clerical schools). Many, including Benjamin Rush, favored taxpayer-funded schools, and said if people won't fund this, they won't fund anything.

Now, WHAT they expected to be taught is a different matter, but it is inarguable that they all favored government-funded schools. I wish the conclusion was different, but that's the evidence: Washington, Madison, Rush, Webster, Adams, etc.
