A tsunami advisory has been issued for the California coast, including Del Norte County It's hard to imagine how those areas could possibly be affected.
Tsunami's travel a straight line, no?

How many freepers we have in Hawaii?
We need someone to do a ping and a soundoff.
I hope there is minimal wave action there and no damages.

I wonder how many surfers are waxing their boards in anticipation.
I've seen some of them attempt to take on hurricane waves, usually very unsuccessfully, do I know there will be some fools try on these waves.
At first glance, 15-foot waves don't sound all that bad, but these won't be the slow rolling type waves usually encountered...these will be moving at a much higher rate of speed and packing a lot more punch as a result.

If the ocean buoys are showing 5 to 16 foot waves, what’s the coastal impact wave going to be?

There was a huge earthquake in Japan last friday, the one now in Chile, and I am in between very very literally up here in Alaska on the Ring of Fire, and I have seen what the 1964 Good Friday quake did up here.

I know, it's really eerie the number of quakes lately.
I lived in So. Cal for most of my life and have been through my share of quakes going back as far as the Sylmar quake in 1971 theough the Norhtridge quake in 1994 (lost my house in that one)
They're no fun, that's for sure.

I feel sooooooo stupid.
After I read this thread, I did a quick search on 'quake' and 'earthquake' -- so of course I never located the MAIN Chile Earthquake messagethread, which currently is almost a thousand postings long.
I have NO idea why it didn't get into the sidebar, like this thread of Kristinn's did -- I don't really understand the mechanics of thread posting.
Here's the main thread with hundreds & hundreds of posts:

Prayers for the victims and those in the tsunami's sights and their loved ones.

That is a fact, at that speed its an underwater shock wave, its when it approaches shallow land is when it builds, a ship at sea would feel a pulse but would probably not see much of a wave.

Well the shop is only 18 feet above high tide but at least the donut mill is on high ground. The north west had one of these mega quakes in 1700 and the geologist say they happen every 200 years?
