Republicans are going to show up Thursday for a meeting on health care reform with President Obama and congressional Democrats, but they aren't going to accept whole cloth a bill outlining Democratic plans that is being posted on the White House Web site Monday.

"If they are going to lay out the plan they want four days in advance, what are we discussing?" Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., asked on "Fox News Sunday."

McConnell repeatedly used the word "arrogant" to describe any plan to move forward with health care proposals that the American people widely panned last year. He added that reconciliation -- a budget maneuver that allows the majority party to pass legislation with 51 votes and no procedural blocks -- would not fly.

"You know, we've witnessed the 'Cornhusker kickback,' the 'Louisiana purchase,' 'the Gatorade,' the special deal for Florida. Now they are suggesting they might use a device which has never been used the for this kind of major systemic reform. We know it would be -- the only thing bipartisan about it would be the opposition to it," he said.

"I think they're having a hard time getting the message here. The American people do not want this bill to pass. And it strikes me as rather arrogant to say, 'Well, we're going to give it to you anyway, and we'll use whatever device is available to achieve that end,'" McConnell added.

Obama controls the setting. Obama controls the media message. The starting point is the bill language he will present. The GOP started well with the demand that everything begin with a blank slate, but they did not hold the position. Now, they are snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. It must be GOP genetic.

Why should the Republicans be afraid to take on Obama over healthcare, and why should you guys be so certain Republicans will “cave”? All the negativism around here gets tiring. Obamacare is a bad idea. If the Republicans can’t go into a meeting and make the case for a position shared by about 60% of the voters, then it would be good for us to understand that so we can get new leaders. I belive they’ll do better than you think. Sometimes leaders have to rise to the people, rather than vice versa.

Mitch should also add: I am going to write a book on healthcare. It will be 2000 pages long and you have two hours to read it."

What can they possibly be hopeful about? That somehow a bill will be coddled and passed over the EXPRESS OBJECTION of the American people? That we will be taking the first steps toward socialized medicine for the entire country, not just seniors forced into it, no out whatever??

(shaking my head)

We’ve had our hopes up before, only to have those like McCain and Graham throw themselves in the middle and muddy up the response.

Anybody know who all is going to be there?
