My wife is Japanese, and she remembers eating whale meat in Japan when she was growing up

My wife too.

they used to be able to buy it in the grocery store like any other meat.

Still can, in Nagasaki Prefecture at least.

I hope this POS pirate enjoys his incarceration. Japanese jails are just about the worst thing that could happen to a Westerner. Take it to the bank.

Three years of fish heads and rice is going to be pretty tough for a vegan.

And Radio Taisyo every morning at 4:00 am ( Radio led exercise..in Japanese over loudspeakers...you do not do them even because you do not know the language?....no rice and fish heads for you for 3 days. I love it when Vegans meet the real world.)

My wife is Japanese as well and she too can remember eating whale meat both at school and at home. She says that it wasn’t an everyday meal, but occasionally her family would eat it.

You wrote, “His vocabulary is not as offensive as your trying to shut him up.”

The man/woman was not asked to “shut up”, only asked to not use the pejorative “jap”, but instead use Japanese.
Many others are able to spell out the name. Is that so difficult, or is using the pejorative a way to release some anger?

For disclosure, I grew up in the 30’s and 40’s and for 5 years in the 60’s I lived in Japan.

***The man/woman was not asked to “shut up”, only asked to not use the pejorative “jap”, but instead use Japanese. Many others are able to spell out the name. Is that so difficult, or is using the pejorative a way to release some anger***

Your right, you did not actually ask him to shut up, just not to use words that offend you. pejorative as you call it.. In other words, use your words or shut up. Who gave you the right to tell another how to express his/her anger. If some arrogant person tried to tell me what words to use and to "properly" show anger, they may end up with a mouth full of loose teeth. It is the left and socialist that use offended to shut down speech..

I had an uncle that fought in WW2 contracted malaria in the jungles of either New Guinea or Borneo (I forgot which) and had quite a few relapses when he returned home..died a relative young man with 2 young children.. He as many that fought in the war have a right to call the enemy what ever they want. Their blood was shed fighting the Japs...I don't personally find that offensive....I am sure those that were brutalized by the "japs" including the Rape of Naking /sp. can call them whatever they like...

You are not the speech police. The Japanese are no longer our enemy right now, but their cruelty to their prisoners rival Germany and the concentration camps. There are still men alive today that survived that.

Just because you lived there for a few years doesn't give you the right to admonish another in this country who for all we know was part of their brutality...

,p. I also grew up in the 30's and 40's. So I don't really know what that has to do with the subject at hand, but it must mean something to you....

Was recently on a thread related to John Murtha now dead and A lot of viet vets voiced their anger at that idiot (don't want to call him what I would like to, might get banned) Someone came in and tried to shut down their anger using the bible as a rebuke...Those men have a right to their anger also and someone was offended and wanted them also to shut up....without using those exact words, just as you did...

I would say you can use your vocabulary to express yourself and veterans and their families can use theirs...they earned it with their blood. You have no right not to be offended, because you lived in Japan for some years...If someone is offended, its their problem not the problem of the one that uttered the word...

Since you are probably close to my age you must have been brought up with "sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me"...

I am over 70 and no word has offended me in my life...and a few good one's have been thrown my way over the years...Offended is only one man's opinion over another..

“This is a Conservative web site, and we Conservatives are not opposed to hunting and fishing around here.” Good to know that you speak for everyone. I must have missed the whale-hunting part of the platform when I signed up. So although I support limited govt, 2A rights, the free market and low taxes, I’m not a conservative because I am bothered by Asians massacring whales? I hope that you are merely and outlier, and don’t represent the overall tenor of FR.

He represents many more of us than you do. The Japs are engaged in a legal activity, hunting a species of whale that is not endangered, in fact if I recall correctly there are close to 2 million total of the type of whale that they hunt. They hunt them for food, they are no more guilty of any wrong doing than people who hunt Tuna, Salmon, crabs, Lobster or any other species of sea life for food and profit.

The pirates, OTH, are guilty of committing many crimes against the Japanese ships that they harass on a yearly basis and the video of the sinking of the ship in question clearly shows the pirates caused the sinking.

Now, if you don't want to hunt whales, don't hunt them, but if you wish to join Greenpeace or some other communist enviro outfit, or just applaud their efforts, I would suggest leaving FR and joining DU, it would suit you much better I would think.

Join DU? Don’t be silly. Between you and the other fella I’m getting all of the knee-jerk group think that I could possibly need.

I’m not sure what is so controversial about me saying that IN MY OPINION the Japanese shouldn’t slaughter higher mammals. I said nothing in support of the pirate.

Oh, and I love the “legal activity” argument, as if any law established by a legislative body of politicians is somehow holy. Should the left someday get their way and make it legal to intern us “right-wingers” because we are a danger to their socialist order, I’d be pretty upset with their “legal activity”.

Whale hunting is as much a conservative position as kite flying.
