How does a film get an “expansion”?

By "expanding" the time frame covered. Instead of just the Exodus it was expanded to start with Abraham and run all the way to modern times.

Then the word is “lengthen.” Or, perhaps, the film doesn’t “get an expansion,” but its scope expands. Could that be what they were attempting, badly, to communicate?
