Actor known for his military roles lobbies for bill on naming of Marine department

The actor who played the drill sergeant in “Full Metal Jacket” is coming to Washington, D.C., next week to lobby Congress to pass a long-stalled bill.

R. Lee Ermey is the national spokesman for a growing grassroots effort behind legislation sponsored by Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.) and Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) that would rename the Department of the Navy as the Department of the Navy and Marine Corps.

Ermey, who was in the Marine Corps for 11 years, has been in over 100 movies, including “Apocalypse Now,” “Dead Man Walking” and “Leaving Las Vegas,” according to imdb.com.

Over the past decade, Jones has repeatedly pushed his colleagues to pass his bill. Jones’s bill has 367 co-sponsors. Roberts (R-Kan.), a Marine Corps veteran, introduced companion legislation last year.

The Marine Corps League, which is orchestrating the grassroots effort with Ermey, has started a petition-writing campaign and is bringing supporters of Jones’s legislation to Capitol Hill on Thursday.

“Marines have fought and died with their Navy brothers and sisters for more than 200 years,” said Michael Blum, Marine Corps League executive director in a statement. “It’s finally time to give the Marine Corps the recognition the branch has long deserved.”

Although the Marine Corps has been a separate service since the National Security Act of 1947, it does not get equal billing with the Navy, Air Force and Army, each of which has a Pentagon department named after it. Since the Marine Corps’s earliest days, it has operated under the Department of the Navy.

I’d pay good money to see “The Gunny” dress down Congress.

Interesting (if useless) bit of trivia: The role of Hartman in FMJ was originally to be played by Tim Colceri, the fellow who played the door gunner on the helicopter flying Joker and Raptorman to the front. Kubrick liked Ermey better (who was brought in originally as a technical advisor) and gave him the SDI role instead.

Also, Anthony Michael Hall was original hired to play the part of Joker.

Also also, I would *love* to see Babs Boxer try to browbeat Ermey into calling her Senator instead of ma’am. Muahahaha!!!

Loved Gunny until I heard he supports BO on the birth certificate issue. Now he is just another actor who happens to support the military. Who also supports a president who does not support the military.

Regarding active duty birthers questioning the legality of BOs orders.

To quote “I haven’t heard about those guys,” Ermey told Military.com during an Aug. 21 interview. “If I do run across them though, trust me, I’ll square them away.”

“Of Obama, Ermey said he was “a little wary at first” on how he would handle the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Not now, though.

“I think our president is doing a commendable job,” he said. “He picked up where George Bush left off. … We’re continuing to take care of the terrorist situation.”

I’m sure Obambi will be in favor of the Marine “corpse” having its own department.

The USMC doesn't need any additional recognition,IMO.It's well understood that, since its birth, its members have been bravely, skillfully and proudly defending our nation.Their "exploits" are the stuff of legend.

But the USMC is,and has been since birth,a part of the Navy.

I don't see a need for this. And yes,I'm prepared to be torn a new one by various Marine Freepers.

Does this mean the Marine Corps will no longer be considered Naval Infantry?

Or that the Navy will no longer be considered the Marine Transport Service?

Kubrick liked Ermey better (who was brought in originally as a technical advisor) and gave him the SDI role instead.

There was also the story about how Ermey ad-libbed like crazy, including the famous "reach around" comment. Kubrick halted filming, because he'd never heard the term before and needed Ermey to explain it to him ... :D

Nothing is changing. They are only requesting for a change in the Department Name, so as to include the Marine Corp. The Corp will still be under the Navy.

I know, but it was just too much of an opportunity for fun.

We didn't really have a dog in this fight until recently - the last naval veteran in our family was with Dewey at Manila Bay and we had no Marines at all.

But now my son's at Camp Lejeune. So Oooo-rah! Devil Dogs!

Sure am glad they are not recommending it be named Department of the Navy and Marine Corpse!

Amen, brother ‘cause the USMC is sick of being tied to that YMCA song “In The Navy”. Go Marines and get it done!

BTW, my husband, dad, uncle and SIL served USMC. My son is a Navy Veteran from Desert Storm so I love them all.

IMHO, it does not go far enough. The Marines are not “AND” anything, they are Marines. So we need a Department of Marines.

I will grant you I probably do not know all the ramifications of what I am saying. For example, the Marine Corp may not want a divorce from the navy.

BTW, did you see that Obamby, in a speech called a corpsman a corpse man. And repeated it.
